Before running to the pharmacy to deal with your next heartburn attack, head to your local grocery or health food store instead. Mother Nature supplies several herbs to quickly and gently douse the flames in your stomach. With all the possible side effects of drugs, taking a natural, herbal approach to acid indigestion makes good sense, and in the long run is far more beneficial for your digestive system.

Symptoms of heartburn

Acid indigestion, often called "heartburn" is characterized by heaviness, bloating, dull stomach pain or a burning sensation after a meal.

Causes of Acid Indigestion

Indigestion is caused by excess acids in the stomach and the intestines. The excess acid is often the result of poor eating habits. Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Foods

A balanced diet, essential in avoiding acid indigestion, includes primary, secondary and tertiary foods.

Primary foods include whole grains as 20% to 30% of the diet, and proteins (such as animal protein, tofu, tempeh and beans) as 20% to 30% of the diet. Beans should be consumed in small portions. Vegetable sources of protein need to be consumed in a larger volume to equal a corresponding amount of animal protein.

Secondary foods are fresh seasonal vegetables, mostly lightly cooked, as 30% to 40% of the diet.

Tertiary foods include dairy products, eggs, and fruits which make up 5% to 10% of the diet, and fats and oils, such as sesame and olive oils and clari-fied butter (ghee) as 2% of the diet.

Relief From Herbal Antacids

Unlike antacids available in grocery stores, herbal antacids provide more effective relief of acid indigestion. Antacid herbs have the ability to neutralize excess acids in the stomach and intestines. Some of these herbs simultaneously protect the stomach lining. Many herbs not only provide relief from indigestion, but relieve other digestive ailments as well as help maintain healthy digestion. Some of these herbs include:
  • Cinnamon stimulates digestion, soothes the digestive tract, and relieves gas and griping (severe pains in the bowels).

Hawthorn berries – 6 parts
Peppermint – 3 parts (stimulate the digestive tract)
Wild yam root – 6 parts
Fennel seed – 3 parts
Ginger root – 3 parts

Simmer marshmallow root, hawthorn berries and wild yam root (one quart of water for every three ounces of herbs) for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and add the peppermint, fennel seed and ginger root. Let steep 10 minutes. Strain and drink one-half cup to one cup after meals or more often as needed.

  • A water ionizer stick can be submerged in water to increase alkalinity which is great when you're on the move.
  • Likewise, a portable water ionizer bottle is an excellent way to alkalize water when away from home.
  • An alkaline water ionizer which connects to your faucets provides the greatest range of alkaline and acidic water in the home. This allows for acidic water to sterilize and clean cooking equipment and wounds, and alkaline water for cooking and drinking.

Hard Water Treatment Methods

Hard water treatment methods are grouped into four categories depending on how they work. They all reduce, inhibit or eliminate limescale and each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Below is a synopsis of how each of the four categories work, what they do, how they do it, and their advantages and disadvantages.

1) Physical Water Conditioners

Physical Water Conditioners, so called because they physically alter the properties of hard water to reduce or eliminate limescale formation, come in three different types - electronic, electrolytic and magnetic.

1a) Electronic water conditioners, also know as electronic descalers or limescale inhibitors, generally comprise of a small box of electronics and one or more coils wrapped around the pipework.

What they do: Electronic conditioners work by transmitting an audio frequency or radio frequency signal into the water via induction coils wrapped around the pipework. This inhibits the build up of limescale inside water pipes and through time, reduces existing scale. A softer scale may still form on shower heads, taps and other surfaces, but is much easier to clean.

Advantages: Electronic descalers are relatively cheap in comparison with other hard water treatment methods and offer a cost effective solution to limescale problems. No plumbing is required, making them very easy to install. And because nothing is removed or added to the water, healthy minerals are retained and the water remains safe to drink.

Disadvantages: Although sometimes not as effective as other treatment methods, most manufacturers offer a full money back guarantee if the device does not work as well as expected.

1b) Electrolytic water conditioners are inline devices that need to be plumbed into the water system. They can be bought with 15mm, 22mm, or 28mm end connectors to suit the pipework.

What they do: Inside an electrolytic conditioner are two dissimilar metals, normally copper and zinc, which act as a cathode and an anode. The electrolytic current that flows from the cathode to the anode causes small quantities of metal ions to dissolve into the water. The metal ions then disrupt the positively charged scale forming particles so that they don't clump together and form scale.

Advantages: Like electronic descalers, electrolytic scale inhibitors are relatively cheap to buy. They do not need an electric power supply and so annual running costs are zero. They provide whole house protection against limescale problems and treated water is safe to drink.

Disadvantages: Electrolytic water conditioners need to be periodically replaced to maintain the full level of protection and, unlike electronic conditioners, they need to be plumbed into the pipework, adding to the initial cost.

1c) Magnet water conditioners come in two forms. They either clamp onto the outside of the pipework or are fitted inline with the pipework in the same way as electrolytic softeners.

What they do: Magnetic conditioners work in a similar way to electronic conditioners, but use a magnetic field rather than an electric field to alter the characteristics of the scale producing minerals in the water. Scale particles in the treated water lose their ability to adhere to one another and to pipes, boilers and other internal surfaces.

Advantages: Magnetic conditioners are fairly popular due to their relatively low cost. The clamping type is easy to fit and normally just needs tightening onto the pipework with a spanner. They do not need any electrical power and so running costs are zero.

Disadvantages: Magnetic conditioners are generally not suitable for whole house protection, only single appliances. Some magnetic conditioners need to be plumbed into the pipework and they all have to be replaced periodically to maintain full performance.

2) Chemical Water Conditioners

Chemical water conditioners fall into two categories, packaged softeners and dosing systems. Packaged softeners can be further split into precipitating and non-precipitating types. The principal use of packaged softeners is to soften water for washing clothes

2a) Precipitating packaged softeners include washing soda and borax. Although borax has a number of uses around the home, the main purpose of packaged softeners is for washing clothes and as such they are not suitable for whole house water softening and treated water is not fit to drink.

What they do: Precipitating softeners soften the water by combining with calcium and magnesium ions found in hard water. This causes the mineral ions to precipitate out, so that they don't interfere with the washing process.

Advantages: Cheap, easy to use softener that, in addition to softening, also cleans and deodorises. Adding borax or washing soda to the wash, will also prevent limescale build-up in the washing machine.

Disadvantages: Precipitating softeners make the water cloudy and can cling to materials in the wash. They also increase the alkalinity of the water, which can damage skin and some fabrics.

2b) Non-precipitating softeners include products such as calgon and more commonly used than precipitating softeners. Like all packaged softeners, they are only intended for use in the laundry.

What they do: They work by using phosphates, which react with the calcium and magnesium ions in hard water and holds them in solution.

Advantages: As the name suggests, non-precipitating softeners do not form a precipitate and so the water remains clear. They do not increase the alkalinity of the water and so they're safe to use with all fabrics.

Disadvantages: Generally more expensive than precipitating softeners and not so eco friendly because of their high phosphate content.

2c) Phosphate dosing systems comprise of a cartridge of phosphate held in a container that is fitted to the plumbing system. Water passing through the cartridge is dosed with small quantities of phosphate which softens the water.

What they do: Like non-precipitating softeners, they work by adding phosphates to the water. However, in dosing systems, food grade polyphosphates are used. The polyphosphates act as a sequester to stop the hardness minerals in hard water from precipitating out.

Advantages: Dosing systems typically cost in the region of £60 to buy, plus installation costs. Although generally only used for single appliance protection, they can provide whole house treatment.

Disadvantages: Most people prefer not to have phosphates in their drinking water, even if they are food grade safe. Replacement cartridges incur additional annual running costs of between £30 and £60.

3) Mechanical Water Softeners

Mechanical Water Softeners, or ion exchange softeners as they are also know, are true water softeners. Physical and chemical conditioners, although sometimes referred to as 'softeners', do not remove hardness minerals from the water; they merely prevent them from precipitating out or from sticking to surfaces. The only true way to soften hard water is to remove the calcium and magnesium minerals that make it hard. Only ion exchange softeners, and some filter treatment methods, do this.

What they do: Ion exchange softeners work by swapping negative hardness ions in hard water with positive sodium atoms in a resin contained within the softener. Periodically, the resin needs to be regenerated to remove the build up of hardness minerals. This is done by flushing the resin with brine. During the regeneration process, household water is diverted around the softener and so only hard water is available. This is normally set to occur during the night. Alternatively, two resin tanks can be used, with one regenerating while the other is in service.

Advantages: Ion exchange softeners offer all the advantages of truly soft water for the whole house.

Disadvantages: The main drawbacks with ion exchange softeners are that they're expensive to buy, costly to run and can take up quite a bit of room (normally on the kitchen). A further drawback is that treated water contains sodium (salt). That said, they produce truly soft water and issues with sodium in the water can be resolved by leaving one outlet in the house untreated.

4) Water Filters

Water filters come in many shapes and guises from stand-alone jugs to fully integrated reverse osmosis units. The three most common types found in UK homes that will remove calcium and magnesium from hard water are carbon resin filters, reverse osmosis units and water distillers. There are many other types of filter available, but they do not produce soft water.

Since filtered water is normally only available from a single outlet, water filters do not alleviate hard water problems throughout the rest of the home. Limescale deposits will still exist through the plumbing and heating system and on taps, showerheads and other surfaces.

4a) Carbon resin filters are normally used in conjunction with activated carbon filters. The carbon resin removes hardness minerals from the water and the activate carbon filter then filters out chemicals.

What they do: Carbon resin filters use an ion exchange resin to remove hardness minerals from the water in a similar manner to mechanical water softeners. An activated carbon filter then removes chlorine and other chemicals to improve the taste and eliminate odours.

Advantages: Pleasant tasting, cheap, chlorine free, soft water.

Disadvantages: Unlike mechanical water softeners, the ion exchange resin is not regenerated and builds up contaminants until it needs to be replaced. The charcoal filter also needs periodic replacement and like all filter systems, they do not offer a practical solution to limescale problems elsewhere in the house.

4b) Reverse osmosis systems are perhaps the most popular type of filter for household water treatment. Whilst RO systems will remove calcium and magnesium ions from hard water, they are not normally installed purely for this purpose. Many homes with soft water have RO systems. Most home owners buy reverse osmosis systems to obtain cleaner, purer, water than is normally available from their water supplier.

What they do: Reverse osmosis filters work by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane which filters out impurities. The membrane has microscopic holes through which water molecules can pass, but larger particles and molecules (like the hardness minerals) are blocked.

Advantages: In addition to effectively removing most contaminants, RO treated water tastes better, enhances the flavour of drinks like coffee, tea and fruit squashes. And in hard water areas, household appliances such as steam irons, coffee makers and kettles, will not suffer from the normal scaling.

Disadvantages: The main drawback with reverse osmosis units is that they use lots of water. Typical RO filter units purify only ten percent of the water that enters the system; the rest is piped to waste. This makes them unsuitable for whole house water treatment. Additionally, filter cartridges and the RO membrane require periodic cleaning / replacement (sometimes by a professional). Hard water also reduces the life of the RO membrane. With filter replacements typically costing between £150 and £700, they can also be expensive to maintain.

4c) Water distillers produce the purest water possible. Appliance for the home look like large kettles, while larger under-counter units are available for commercial premises and dental surgeries.

What they do: Distillers work by boiling water into steam, which then condenses back into water and is collected in a storage container. Impurities in the water are not converted into steam and so only pure water condenses into the storage container. Contaminants are left behind in the boiling chamber, which can then be cleaned with special crystals.

Advantages: Distillers offer the purest water money can buy. They have all the benefits of reverse osmosis filters plus a few others. The water they produce is purer than bottled water, always on tap and there are no heave bottles to carry back from the supermarket.

Disadvantages: Distillation is not practical or economically viable for whole house water treatment, so limescale will still build up in pipes, boilers and heat exchangers as well as on taps, shower heads and other surfaces.

The Truth About the Benefits of Drinking Alkaline Water

By now, you have probably heard about drinking ionized, alkaline water for your health. It can be difficult to sort through the wealth of information out there. Part of our mission at Earth's Balance is to help you differentiate the true from the false and explain why making it a part of your overall wellness plan is not only smart, but crucial to your health.

1. THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS IN THE BODY ARE NOT DESTROYED BY STOMACH ACID

The most common question we've received is, "What happens to alkaline water when it reaches the stomach, which is highly acidic?" Different parts of the body must maintain different pH levels to function properly. The normal pH value of the blood is slightly alkaline, around 7.2-7.4. The body maintains these values through homeostasis, which is the term used to describe the physiological processes the body goes through in order to maintain the internal equilibrium, or balance, that keeps us alive.

Drinking alkaline water and consuming alkaline foods does cause the stomach pH to go up temporarily. The body reacts by producing hydrochloric acid to bring the stomach back to its normal pH, which is around 4. It is the process of bringing the stomach pH back to normal that creates alkalinity in the body. When the body uses carbon dioxide, water, and sodium chloride to produce hydrochloric acid, the by-products that are left are called bicarbonates. Bicarbonates are alkaline buffers that neutralize excess acids in the blood and dissolve solid acidic wastes into a liquid form. Therefore, drinking alkaline water is not negated by stomach acid. In looking at the body as a whole, there is a net gain of alkalinity in the blood and body cells due to the homeostatic processes that are activated when you drink alkaline water. The process is the same whether you are drinking water or eating alkaline foods such as green vegetables, almond, and certain fruits. Think about it, there has been no dispute that alkaline foods cause a net gain of alkalinity in your body. When critics of alkaline water acknowledge that foods can cause alkalinity in the body, but state that the benefits of drinking alkaline water are negated by stomach acid, they are contradicting themselves!

2. IT HELPS YOUR BODY MAINTAIN A HEALTHY pH WITH LESS DAMAGE TO YOUR HEALTH

The other main argument is that because of homeostasis, drinking alkaline water cannot change the pH of your blood. We agree with this fact. No matter what you eat or drink, your body will maintain its normal pH to keep you alive. What you need to understand is that HOW the body does this is what can be so damaging to your health. Let's use drinking a glass of coke as an example. Coke has an acidic pH, around 1 or 2. It is loaded with phosphoric acid to keep you from immediately vomiting up the 10 teaspoons of sugar (which is also acidic) you've just ingested. If your body did not act immediately to counteract this acidity, you would slip into a coma and die. The body will use alkaline minerals to neutralize the acidity. Let's hope you are taking plenty of mineral supplements and eating a mineral rich diet, otherwise the body has no choice but to pull alkaline minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, straight from your bones, teeth, and muscles. This is why drinking coke and eating the highly acidic diet of the average American, has been linked to osteoporosis, dental problems, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. So, we are not saying alkaline water will change the pH of your blood and body cells by itself. What we are saying is that drinking alkaline water can help your body maintain its normal pH levels without your body having to eat itself alive.

3. IT OCCURS NATURALLY FROM THE PUREST WATER SOURCES IN THE WORLD

Next, many critics of ionized, alkaline water claim it is a man-made and does not occur naturally. This is simply not true. The purest water in the world found in rocky, mountainous, glacier streams is alkaline and is naturally ionized by flowing over the rocks and down into waterfalls. All we are doing is restoring water to its natural state and removing the impurities that have been added by governments and pollution in the environment. It is the same concept as supplementing with vitamins and minerals that are now deficient in our foods due to over use of the soil, pesticide and chemical use, and that the average person does not eat enough of in their diet. Ionized, alkaline water is water as nature intended in the first place. (Maybe that's why it is so good for you!)

4. IT IS NOT THE ONLY THING YOU NEED TO STAY HEALTHY

Lastly, I would like to address the marketers in our industry that promote alkaline water as a "cure-all" or as the answer to curing and preventing all disease. Yes, many chronic illnesses are caused by acidity in the body. Yes, drinking alkaline water will help neutralize and flush out acidic wastes that contribute to these diseases. It has amazing anti-oxidant properties and can eliminate chronic dehydration. I believe it is crucial to your health and should be the only water you drink, especially if you already suffer from some form of chronic disease. However, the benefits of alkaline water are best obtained with a proper diet and exercise, properly managing stress levels, and supplementing with organic vitamins and minerals. If you only drink alkaline water and continue to eat an unhealthy, acidic diet, do not take any other supplements, and do not exercise, you are not going to be healthy. Balance is key!

Potassium – Finding the Proper Balance to Maintain a Healthy Body

Potassium is a nutrient that is critical for the proper function of all cells, tissues, and organs in the human body. It is crucial to heart function and plays a major role in skeletal and smooth muscle contraction, which is important for normal digestive and muscular function. Potassium is also an electrolyte, meaning it conducts electricity in the body, along with calcium, chloride, magnesium and sodium. The kidney is the main organ that controls the balance of potassium as it removes excess potassium into the urine.

Benefits to Keeping Potassium Levels Balanced

Hypokalemia is the result of having too little potassium in the blood and may be counteracted by ingesting foods containing high levels of potassium. On the other hand, hyperkalemia occurs when too much potassium is in the bloodstream. Older people have a greater risk of hyperkalemia as the kidneys become less efficient at eliminating potassium as a person ages.

Keeping the right potassium balance in the body relies on the amount of calcium, magnesium and sodium present in the body. Too much sodium or too little magnesium may increase the need for more potassium. As the daily intake of salt in Western cultures is much higher than other cultures, relative deficiency of dietary potassium in the modern diet may play a role in the pathology of some chronic diseases. Various studies have shown the benefits of healthy potassium diet and they include the following:
  • an increased potassium intake is associated with decreased risk of stroke
  • there are positive associations between dietary potassium intake and bone mineral density
  • decrease in kidney stones
  • lower blood pressure
Most people obtain the required amounts of potassium from a diet rich in vegetables and fruits. Good sources of potassium include bananas, orange, avocados, cantaloupes, tomatoes, potatoes, lima beans, flounder, salmon, cod, chicken, and other meats.

Hypokalemia – Low Levels of Potassium in the Blood

When the body has too little potassium, it is known as hypokalemia. In an article at WebMD simply titled "Hypokalemia", David Garth, MD states that the reference range for potassium levels is 3.5-5 mEq/L with total body potassium stores of approximately 50 mEq/kg. While hypokalemia is generally defined as a potassium level of less than 3.5 mEq/L, moderate hypokalemia is rated at a serum level of 2.5-3 mEq/L and severe hypokalemia is less than 2.5 mEq/L.

Hypokalemia is usually caused by the loss of too much potassium through the urine or intestines but is also known to come about due to prolonged vomiting, enemas or laxative use, steroid use, diuretics, excessive sweating, malnutrition or as a result of a malabsorption syndrome such as Crohn's disease. Symptoms of hypokalemia include:
  • nausea or vomiting
  • psychosis, delirium or hallucinations
  • weakness, lack of energy
  • tingling or numbness
  • abdominal cramps or bloating
  • stomach disturbances
  • irregular heartbeat
Hyperkalemia – High Levels of Potassium in the Blood

Hyperkalemia occurs when the blood potassium levels are higher than 6.0 mEq/L and requires immediate treatment as this condition can induce deadly cardiac arrhythmias. Although hyperkalemia is one of the deadliest electrolyte abnormalities, it is also one of the most treatable. Symptoms may include severe fatigue, an absent or weak heartbeat, nausea or changes in breathing pattern.

Hyperkalemia may be related to an increase in total body potassium or the excess release of potassium from the cells into the bloodstream. As the kidneys normally remove excess potassium from the body, most cases of hyperkalemia are caused by disorders such as acute and chronic kidney failure that reduce the kidneys' ability to rid the body of potassium. Other causes include:
  • Addison's disease
  • type 1 diabetes
  • alcoholism
  • heavy drug use
  • destruction of red blood cells due to severe injury or burns
Sometimes a report of high blood potassium isn't true and may actually be the result of ruptured blood cells in the blood sample either during or shortly after drawing the sample. The ruptured cells leak their potassium into the sample which falsely raises the amount of potassium in the blood sample, creating an incorrect diagnosis of hyperkalemia.

It is suggested that women from age 20 should think of undergoing mammography every three years, and once a year after they reach age 40.

Mammography is a medical procedure that is crucial for diagnosing breast cancer or other breast complications at an early stage. It is the examination of breasts using X-rays. In the procedure, the medical professional sets the breast in between two plastic plates. The plates then compress the breast tissues and get an X-ray. It only requires around 20 minutes to get this procedure done.

How much does a Mammogram Cost?

The primary determinants of mammogram prices are the state, city, and facility of treatment and health insurance. In general, mammogram costs start from about $100 to $300 or even more in particular conditions. Health insurance also plays a vital role when it comes to the costs. A majority of the states now require health insurance agencies to cover all or partial expenses of the treatment, especially for women above the age of 40.

In order to get the full benefits, discuss the contents and specifications of your health insurance policy with the service provider. If you are not covered by any health insurance policy, you will need to bear expenses ranging from $80 to $120. However, some may have to pay more as per the location of the treatment. Another alternative to mammography is a clinical breast examination which is more inexpensive. However, it is better that this examination is followed through a mammography. However, large doses of licorice are not recommended, as the compounds glycyrrhizic and glycyrrhetinic acids found in licorice can cause hypokalemia (low level of potassium in blood) and increase in blood pressure. To avoid such a situation, deglycyrrhizinated licorice preparations should be used which are also available.

Licorice can be used in the treatment of ileitis, the inflammation of ileum (last part of the small intestine). Because of its antispasmodic property, it is effective in diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut syndrome (damaged bowel lining caused by antibiotics, toxins, parasites, etc.) and Crohn's disease. In traditional herbal medicines, it is also used in the treatment of cancer. Some studies have shown that licorice can be effective in heart diseases, while some other studies have found it to reduce the level of cholesterol.

Licorice has been found to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) in mice. Licorice is also supposed to enhance memory and cognition. Some researches have shown that the compound glycyrrhizin found in licorice may be effective in treating hepatitis B and hepatitis C. It is also found to reduce body fat. Some recent studies suggested that this magic herb can be effective in treating HIV/AIDS as it inhibits the replication of HIV and stimulate interferons, which is the virus fighting agent of the body.

However, excess consumption of licorice candies has been found to be harmful for the liver and cardiovascular system. 1. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Thanks to its weather and low cost of living, Thailand has been on retirees' radars for years, and Chiang Mai is cheap, even by Thai standards.


"For under $2,000, I live like a king," says Barry, a Canadian who relocated to Chiang Mai in early 2009. Since then, he has rented a 1,200-square-foot condo for a little more than $400 per month. Groceries are no big concern, usually running him about $50 per month. Restaurants cost about twice that at $100 per month -- and he goes out to eat almost every day.

Barry says that Chiang Mai has just about everything he needs. "There are Western-style restaurants, entertainment venues and social events," he says. The city has several modern hospitals. "I had an emergency spinal fusion two years ago at a cost of 280,000 baht (about $9,300 at the time). In Canada, medical coverage is free, but the waiting time is long. Here, the service is almost instantaneous and very professional."

More routine medical issues are so inexpensive, Barry says, that he doesn't need insurance to cover them. "Going to a dentist for a checkup and cleaning is 500 baht," or about $17.

2. Guam

Guam is an often-overlooked alternative for American retirees, despite its many benefits. Because it's a U.S. territory, English is spoken everywhere on the island, and its currency is the U.S. dollar. And, at least on the surface, much of the country's culture and politics will seem familiar to many Americans.


Situated 3,700 miles southwest of Honolulu, Guam is a lower-cost alternative to Hawaii while sharing the same climate. One-bedroom apartments in Guam can rent for as low as $400 per month, with luxury units facing the sea costing $1,000 per month. American citizens can buy property on the island; three-bedroom houses often sell for less than $200,000.

Since the territory is a small, remote island, most items have to be imported, which means groceries can be more expensive than on the U.S. mainland. Meats, most vegetables and some dairy products can cost twice as much. Restaurants, however, are usually comparable in cost to their American counterparts.

Besides enjoying the weather, retirees in Guam can use both American and Guam-based insurers -- including Medicare -- to cover their health care costs. All major medical services are available at Guam Memorial Hospital, which is certified and accredited by several federal agencies in the U.S.

3. Vancouver, British Columbia

While it doesn't have a reputation as a retiree destination, Vancouver remains a viable option for Americans who want to stay close to home while living the cosmopolitan life across the border. The biggest hurdle for Vancouver-bound Americans is real estate. With the most expensive housing prices in Canada and some of the most expensive property in the world, Vancouver is not an investment option for many retirees.


The average house price is $857,400, according to CanadianBusiness.com. Renting is a possibility: One-bedroom apartments in downtown Vancouver start at around 1,400 Canadian dollars (nearly $1,364). Food and entertainment cost about the same as in Seattle, which is less than three hours away by car.

While Americans may not save much on rent or living costs by moving to Canada, one expense is considerably lower up North: health care. "I save over $400 per month on medicine, and I never have to wait to see my doctor," says Betty Segel, an American who has lived in suburban Vancouver for five years. Retirees in Canada have access to the country's public health care system, which provides free care to residents, including expats with a permanent residence in the country.

For Americans concerned about health care costs, the added premium of Vancouver property just might be worth it.

4. Valencia, Spain

The subprime mortgage crisis caused property values to plummet everywhere, including Spain, making the Mediterranean nation suddenly affordable for a number of retirees. The euro crisis notwithstanding, the southeastern coastal city of Valencia offers hundreds of villas, apartments and houses for less than $200,000. Valencia is a great option for retirees who want to spend their golden years traveling. Its airport offers direct flights to France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Morocco and Norway. Round-trip flights to the rest of Europe often cost less than 150 euros ($195).

5. Buenos Aires, Argentina

Although Buenos Aires is pricier than most parts of South America, it is still a bargain compared to most American cities. A one-bedroom apartment in a good neighborhood can be rented for less than $400 per month or bought for less than $70,000. Internet, cable and electricity combined rarely costs more than $100 per month. The city's comprehensive subway system and buses make transportation cheap. One ride on the subway costs 2.50 Argentine pesos (about 50 cents).


Health care in Argentina is a bargain, thanks to the country's public health care system and surplus of doctors. The quality and affordability of Argentina's medical services has led to a booming medical tourism industry. In 2011, more than 100,000 visitors came to Argentina to receive medical care, according to Argentina's National Institute of Tourism Promotion.

For most expats, the costliest part of Buenos Aires is dining in the city's European-style cafes, restaurants and night spots. While movies are relatively cheap in Argentina (a ticket costs less than $8 in most places), dinner out at a restaurant usually costs between $25 and $45. An espresso will cost around $2.50 and can be found in any of the city's thousands of small open-air cafes.

6. Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Lake Atitlan is about 75 miles away from Guatemala City and is surrounded by volcanoes and villages where Mayan traditions still thrive. The area has perennial spring-like temperatures ranging from the 60s to 80s Fahrenheit. Several waterfront houses are available for rent on the lake; a three-bedroom house costs around $300 per month to rent.


Other expenses remain extremely low in this retiree-friendly part of Guatemala. "Restaurants cost about $10 per dinner and $3 (to) $4 for breakfast," says Andy Lee Graham, founder of HoboTraveler.com. The cheapest foods are also the healthiest; fresh fruits and vegetables cost about a third less in local markets than they do in the U.S.

For those who require assisted living, a full-time personal nurse can be hired for $15 to $20 per day, says Graham. "A maid is about $4 (to) $10 per day."

Graham recommends using taxis or tuk-tuks in Guatemala, which he notes are very cheap. Tuk-tuks are three-wheeled motorized versions of rickshaws. "Tuk-tuks will go between cities for about $3 (to) $5 per city. Inside metropolitan areas, they cost 75 cents for one trip." He warns that, "Driving a car is dangerous, but taxis are safe."

Andy estimates that retirees need $1,000 per month to live near Lake Atitlan.
