You may be asking yourself "What causes hypothyroidism?" The truth is there is a long period of time between when the thyroid gland produces hormones and when those hormones get delivered to the cells for use. If any part of the process is broken the end result is hypothyroidism.
It therefore becomes very apparent that there is a number of hypothyroidism causes that need to be accounted for if you really want to correct the problem.
Unfortunately it goes much deeper than that, since when one part of the process is broken all the other parts suffer, much like a domino effect. So when one part of the chain is broken, functionality has to be restored to the entire process if you want to get it working properly again. That is why it is important to address what causes hypothyroidism all at the same time in order to get it working properly again.
It is never wise to base a diagnosis on TSH levels alone. While TSH levels are high in the majority of hypothyroidism cases it does not necessarily indicate a problem with the thyroid gland. The reason being that if any part of the process is broken the thyroid gland is naturally going to stop producing so many hormones. It is therefore important to get the correct thyroid function test than to base the problem on TSH alone.
It is very easy to point the finger at your thyroid as the problem. That is a mistake that most people and doctors make.
Below I've listed the 3 main factors that affect the thyroids ability to secrete the thyroid hormones that it produces.
Iodine Deficiency
The first factor is an iodine deficiency however in industrialized countries these days, this is very rarely what causes hypothyroidism. When supplementing iodine into ones diet you must be very careful. Over supplementing can lead to iodine toxicity which can actually have a number of negative health effects and make you even more hypothyroid in the end.
It is therefore very important to get the correct testing done for iodine levels instead of taking your own approach to iodine supplementing.
Excessive Estrogen
One of the very common factors of what causes hypothyroidism is excessive estrogen levels which hinders the thyroids ability to secrete thyroid hormones. This problem exists for both women and men. It is however naturally more of a problem for women as they have higher estrogen levels.
When there is an excess of estrogen in the body it deactivates the proteolytic enzymes. These enzymes are responsible for signalling your thyroid to release its hormones. The hormones build up in the thyroid and will often lead to goiters and Hashimoto's Disease.
Progesterone Deficiency
In the same way that estrogen is responsible for deactivating proteolytic enzymes, progesterone is responsible for activating the enzymes. Therefore a deficiency in progesterone goes hand in hand with excessive progesterone.
