Health Benefits of Licorice Tea

Licorice is a sweet flavored root of Glycyrrhiza glabra. This plant is found mainly southern Europe and in few parts of Asia. Uses of the licorice herb were made since the ancient times, there is proof of licorice water being used by Egyptians. Though there are many uses of licorice root, licorice candies are more popular than its health benefits! The sweetness of licorice candies is not artificial, it is due to a substance present in the root known as glycyrrhizic acid. This substance is said to be fifty times sweet than sugarcane!

Talking about the licorice benefits, it is mainly used for cough, constipation, chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer. In traditional Chinese medicine, licorice was used to treat ailments like tuberculosis and diabetes. This is because licorice contains flavonoids and glycyrrhizin which helps to breakdown cortisol produced by the body.

Not just the root but even licorice root tea has also has many health benefits. It is used for flavors and also for its medicinal qualities.

Benefits of Licorice Root Tea

The licorice root is dried and crushed into a powder to make tea. Some of the extracts of licorice do not contain glycyrrhizin, which is why they do not have any of the licorice root side effects. The following are some of the major health benefits.
  • Most of the stomach ailments like ulcers, nausea, heart burn, acid reflux can be treated by licorice tea. Licorice contains a herbal formula known as Iberogast; this formula helps to relieve the symptoms of GERD.
  • This tea is used to soothe sore throat and reduce cough. However, it should be given in right amount to avoid side effects.
  • Various skin disorders can be treated with this tea. It is also used to treat different kinds of boils.
  • One of the major health benefits of this tea, is that it can ease menopause symptoms. It increases the production of estrogen if it is too low and reduces it if the level is too high, that is why it is rightly called the wonder herb.
  • Some of the studies suggest that regular consumption of licorice tea can help to reduce weight. It also suppresses hunger as it is a natural diuretic which can reduce hunger.
  • Apart from these benefits, this tea is also used to cure headache, seasonal allergies, increase, libido, viral liver inflammation and excessive thirst.
Side Effects

If you are worried about the side effects, you need to know that side effects of licorice tea occur only when it is consumed in excess, on a regular basis. One should not consume this tea without prescription. Symptoms like headache, shortness of breath, upper abdominal pain, muscle pain etc. can occur due to excessive use of this tea. Pregnancy is another condition where the consumption of this particular tea should be avoided as it may cause fluid retention. People suffering from high blood pressure, fluid retention, cardiac insufficiency etc. should also avoid consumption.

Licorice Tea Recipe

Ingredients
  • 6 - 7 pieces of dried licorice root
  • 3 cups (850ml) of water
  • 3 teaspoon of Ginseng Oolong Tea
Process

As stated before, preparing this tea is quite easy. All you need to do is, put the dried licorice root along with Ginseng Oolong tea in a teapot. Pour boiling water and let stand for about 5 minutes. Pour it into a cup and let cool slightly before serving. This contains low amount of caffeine and anti-oxidants. It also has a mild flavor.

As you have seen, licorice tea has many benefits, but only when consumed in adequate amounts. So, consult your doctor for the right amount, before enjoying its benefits.

My Bro 499 Pocket WiMAX Abot Kaya Wireless Home Broadband

The new myBro Plan 499 is offered via a new device: the WiMax Pocket Modem. It’s chic, easy to use, and very easy to install! This the new slogan of myBro once you go the official website of SmartBro.

One of the hottest wireless home broadband today is My Bro Abot Kaya 499 from PLDT and Smart. It’s in line with Smartbro’s products and internet services of WiMAX pocket modem and PLDT’s Home services. For just 499 per month, you can have fast internet browsing and surfing with a speed up to 512kbps. I made a review about this fresh WiMAX product.

My Bro 499 Wireless Home Broadband Review

When I went to Smart Service Center recently, I noticed a lot of people were inquiring about the new WiMAX pocket modem – My Bro 499. While on queue waiting for my number to be called, I noticed majority of the interested users were kids, grade schoolers, tagged along their moms and dads asking about Mybro 499 abot kaya (affordable in English). I noticed too that after the Smart employee discussed the product’s features, some of the customers ended up with the Plan 999 Smartbro Canopy product. Ironic because I was there to close my contract with that Plan 999 and there were some customers too who were there complaining about the intermittent internet connection of Smartbro. Hands down with Smartbro, it was really fast especially with my first 2 years of using it. It was strange though it was too slow recently so I decided to end the deal.

My Bro 499 offers WiMAX wireless indoor modem that’s why it’s called wireless home broadband . It means, internet connection is wireless so signal is not so fixed unlike DSL. My Bro also offers up to 512kbps speed of up to 3GB capacity monthly – meaning it’s not unlimited like the Plan 999 1mbps.You can use WiFi yes but with this kind of speed, it’s really recommended for light internet users who research and surf on the web, do emails, Facebook, chat lightly but this is not recommended for downloading and uploading fast or live streaming videos and downloading music. If you are a heavy internet user, the Plan 999 which has up to 1mbps speed is right for you or go for the faster speed like PLDT Fibr which uses fiber optic network and connection capable of fast and stable internet connection.

My Bro 499 is really abot kaya. But for a wise user, using the unlimited internet product is wiser.

My Bro PLDT Wimax Features:
  • Wireless internet connection
  • Free installation (around 3 days upon application and payment)
  • 2 years contract
  • Unlimited internet surfing but with 3GB monthly volume allowance
My Bro 499 Internet Requirements:

  • Proof of billing or latest credit card statement
  • Credit Card if you’ll pay via it
  • Cash of 499 for the first payment

Health Benefits of Licorice

Licorice is the root of the leguminous plant glycyrrhiza glabra, that originated in Southern Europe and some parts of Asia. Licorice extract is obtained by chemically boiling the root of the plant and then evaporating the excess water. It contains a compound known as glycyrrhizin, which is almost 50 times sweeter than sucrose. Licorice extract is used in a wide variety of candies as a flavoring agent throughout the world.

The Goodness of Licorice

Besides its use in candies, licorice also has a wide range of applications in medicines, due to the many health benefits that it imparts. One of the most common uses of licorice is in alleviating respiratory difficulties like cold, sore throat, bronchitis, allergies and even tuberculosis, due to its effectiveness in promoting expectoration. It can dissolve mucus, as a result of which it is being increasingly used in many modern cough syrups. Besides, it is a conventional remedy for mouth, stomach and gastric ulcers. It is also believed to have laxative property. This herb may be used as an antiviral agent in the treatment of shingles and ophthalmic, oral or genital herpes.

Licorice is said to contain isoflavones, which are phytoestrogenic in nature, i.e. they can cause estrogenic and/ or anti estrogenic effects. Therefore, licorice has been found to be effective in reducing the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause. In addition to these, it can also prevent the occurrence of hyperkalemia or elevated level of potassium in blood, which can cause cardiac arrhythmia. Cardiac Arrhythmia refers to conditions which are characterized by abnormal electrical activity in the heart, that cause heart beats which are either too fast or too slow. This can lead to cardiac arrest and consequent death. However, large doses of licorice are not recommended, as the compounds glycyrrhizic and glycyrrhetinic acids found in licorice can cause hypokalemia (low level of potassium in blood) and increase in blood pressure. To avoid such a situation, deglycyrrhizinated licorice preparations should be used which are also available.

Licorice can be used in the treatment of ileitis, the inflammation of ileum (last part of the small intestine). Because of its antispasmodic property, it is effective in diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut syndrome (damaged bowel lining caused by antibiotics, toxins, parasites, etc.) and Crohn's disease. In traditional herbal medicines, it is also used in the treatment of cancer. Some studies have shown that licorice can be effective in heart diseases, while some other studies have found it to reduce the level of cholesterol.

Licorice has been found to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) in mice. Licorice is also supposed to enhance memory and cognition. Some researches have shown that the compound glycyrrhizin found in licorice may be effective in treating hepatitis B and hepatitis C. It is also found to reduce body fat. Some recent studies suggested that this magic herb can be effective in treating HIV/AIDS as it inhibits the replication of HIV and stimulate interferons, which is the virus fighting agent of the body.

However, excess consumption of licorice candies has been found to be harmful for the liver and cardiovascular system. Over-consumption of licorice causes hypertension and edema (swelling due to excess accumulation of fluid in cells, tissues and serous cavities). It is also not suggested for people having hypertension and kidney problems. To conclude, it is important to use this herb carefully and in moderate amounts for medicinal purposes, to derive maximum health benefits.

All Solid Capacitors

Capacitors are the most important component for electronic product's power supply. The quality of the capacitors can impact the stability of the entire system and risk of product failure. Currently there are two types of capacitors, electrolytic capacitors and solid capacitors. Compared to electrolytic capacitors, solid capacitors have a longer lifespan, and provide a more stable power under high temperatures. More importantly, solid capacitors do not have any liquid materials inside, and thus will not suffer a leak which would infringe upon the product’s stability. With such benefits is it no wonder that solid capacitors are very important for product quality's improvement.

Potassium Deficiency: Effects of Low Potassium

Potassium is required by our body for smooth muscular and cellular functioning, cardiovascular functioning, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, for the conversion of glucose into glycogen and muscle building, etc. It is a natural diuretic as it helps in excreting excess amount of sodium from the body through urine. Potassium plays a very important role in maintaining fluid levels, electrolyte balance and pH level of the body. The most important functions of potassium in the human body are to keep blood pressure under control and help in intracellular nutrient transfer. It also helps in keeping acne, allergies, fatigue, kidney stones, etc., at bay.

Potassium plays an important role of a catalyst for many types of enzymes inside the human body. In other words, it helps in spawning many important chemical reactions. It is also believed to help in improving ATP hydrolysis. With so many important body functions to its credit, potassium is no doubt important for our overall health, such that if it is not present in sufficient amount it can hamper these body functions and result in adverse effects on our health.

Effects of Low Potassium on the Body

The medical condition in which our body fails to retain the amount of potassium required for its day-to-day functioning is called potassium deficiency or hypokalemia. This deficiency of potassium in body can be fatal considering it has a crucial role to play in various body functions, all of which are bound to be affected by the lack of this mineral in the body. While blood potassium level in the range of 3.6 to 5.2 mmol/L (millimoles per liter) is considered normal, potassium level below 2.5 mmol/L is considered low and requires prompt medical attention.

The effects of hypokalemia on the body may be very mild to severe. While a person suffering from primary staged hypokalemia may not experiencing anything unusual with the functioning of various organs initially, its effects are bound to get obvious with the severity of the condition. You will get to see the effects of low potassium levels in the body in form of following symptoms:
  • Myalgia (muscle pain), muscular weakness and cramps.
  • Cardiac arrhythmia i.e. abnormal rate of muscle contractions in the heart.
  • Unexplained fatigue and weakness
  • Hyponatremia, which may or may not be accompanied by anxiety.
  • Impaired nerve transmission and deteriorated nervous system, which, in turn, results in confusion and delirium.
  • Tingling and numbness in arms and legs
  • Skin related problems such as blistering, skin eruptions, dryness of skin, acne, etc.
  • Temporary memory loss or other problems like weak memory, difficulty in concentration, etc.
  • Sleeplessness and irritability
  • Intestinal or lung paralysis
  • Heart related problems, such as heart deterioration.
  • It may increase the risk of high blood pressure
  • Ringing noise in the ear at times
  • Digestive system may also get affected due to this deficiency and this may lead to constipation.
Potassium deficiency may also result in hypertension, depression, headache, etc. Critically low levels of potassium is life-threatening as it may cause permanent muscle damage, kidney damage, paralysis, etc.

What are the Causes of Hypokalemia?

A person is most likely to suffer from this deficiency due to excessive excretion of potassium or due to low potassium intake, both of which, in turn, are attributed to various factors coming into play. Most prominent causes of potassium deficiency in people are:
  • Lack of potassium rich foods in the daily diet, i.e. insufficient potassium consumption.
  • Excess potassium excretion through bowel motion or urine.
  • Losing potassium as a result of vomiting, diarrhea or excessive sweating.
  • Use of medication which can interfere and bring down the potassium levels in the body.
  • Excessive use of diuretics and laxatives.
  • Health problems such as diabetic ketoacidosis or chronic kidney failure.
  • Hereditary defects of renal salt transporters, such as the Gitelman syndrome and the Bartter syndrome
Treatment Available for Hypokalemia

If a person is suffering from diarrhea or any other condition which is causing hypokalemia, then he should be treated for the underlying problem so as to stop/regulate potassium loss from his body. At the same time, the physician may also prescribe medication to improve potassium levels in the body. The patient is generally asked to take balanced diet for days in order to restore the physical health pertaining to potassium level and its role in metabolism. Re-hydrating your body will be a good option to bring back the potassium levels to normal. Avoid drinking water, instead have electrolyte solution which contains high potassium which helps in bringing the potassium levels to normal. Basically, the physician will spell out the treatment plan to be followed only after taking the severity of the problem into consideration. In case of excess diarrhea and vomiting for more than 3 days consult a doctor immediately.

Prevention is better than cure, and a balanced diet is the key to prevent hypokalemia. You should include foods high in potassium, such as orange, banana, potato, tomato, watermelon, beans, cereals, meat, grapes, milk, yogurt, spinach, dried fruits (peaches, dates, apricots, raisins) etc., in your daily diet to strike that balance in your meal. While potassium supplements are looked upon as the ideal tools to tackle potassium deficiency, you should only resort to such supplements after consulting your physician.

Symptoms of Potassium Deficiency

Symptoms of potassium deficiency appear when the level of potassium in your blood is severely low. These symptoms are usually mild, but can become more severe as the levels drop. They include weakness, heart palpitations, thirst, and abnormal psychological behavior. This article will discuss the symptoms of potassium deficiency.

Weakness

One of the first symptoms of potassium deficiency is weakness. When there is not enough potassium in your system, you will feel weak or tired. You will also experience cramping in your arms or legs. Sometimes, this cramping will be so severe that you can hardly move around. Cramping may also occur in the abdominal area and cause bloating. Besides weakness and cramping, heart palpitations may also be ones of the symptoms of low potassium.

Heart Palpitations

Heart palpitations are one of the serious symptoms of low potassium. These irregular heart beats can range from mild to severe. If you experience heart palpitations, you will need to seek hospital treatment immediately. Your blood pressure may also begin to lower and may lead to fainting.

Psychological Behavior

Another one of the symptoms of potassium deficiency is abnormal psychological behavior. These abnormal behaviors include depression, psychosis, and delirium. You may also appear confused or have hallucinations whenever the potassium level in your body decreases too much.

Dry Skin

Reduced skin elasticity is also one of the symptoms of potassium deficiency. If there is not enough potassium in your body, your tissues will start to harden. You can test this by pinching the skin on the back of your hand and holding it. If potassium levels in your body are sufficient, the skin should return to normal within two seconds of releasing it.

Thirst

Thirst is one of the final symptoms of potassium deficiency. It is common for you to have a feeling of thirst most of the time. This increased thirst will lead to increased fluid intake which will in turn cause you to increase your frequency of urination.

These are some of the symptoms of potassium deficiency. You will usually experience weakness and leg cramps that can be so severe that you can hardly move around. Heart palpitations are one of the most severe symptoms of low potassium and requires immediate hospital treatment. You may also experience increased thirst and abnormal psychological behavior. If you experience any of these symptoms of low potassium, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

The Viral Marketing Pros and Cons

The term 'viral marketing' was coined by Tim Draper, a Harvard Business School graduate and used extensively to describe the e-mails that aided advertising of products. Viral or chain marketing optimizes the extent to which social networking can benefit sales. There is extensive word-of-mouth viral promotion of products and services that is implemented. Depending on the quantum of sales, the strategy may also include video clips, interactive forums, advergames, newsletters, ebooks and images accompanied by dedicated text messages. However, it is not without its own unique advantages and disadvantages.

How Does Viral Marketing Work?

The basic idea is to generate an 'infection' of thought among the base users, who are also lured into the advertising gimmick for a promised commission that increases with every subsequent sale. The ripple effect created and paid for involves sharing of product benefits with potential users and causing nothing short of an epidemic, while generating multilevel marketing opportunities. There is a pre-designed logistic curve to map the users used to further the interests of the campaign. The success of the campaign largely depends on the rate at which the sales take place. These strategies are often put in place alongside other marketing communication systems such as dedicated public relations and/or extensive advertising.

The goal of viral marketing programs is to identify people who can contribute to sales via quality social networking potential. The aim is to generate viral or easy to understand and replicate messages that appeal to the common man and generate a dedicated marketing environment. Extensive social networking helps to increase the probability of the product or service remaining within the community for a longer time. Viral marketing is a stealth campaign that uses unscrupulous means of under-market advertising to generate an impression that the word of mouth enthusiasm actually springs from use of the product or service.

Pros

Viral marketing enables businesses to remain buoyant within the competitive business world, via a strategy that is not only easy to integrate within a defined buyer-society, but also one of that empowers the unattached onlooker with training, tips and guidance.

This marketing strategy enables business propositions to reach out to a global audience, by effectively putting the Internet connectivity to play. Extensive use of Internet affiliate marketing, ezines and interactive forums enables the entrepreneur to promote the business, globally.

The word-of-mouth concept ripples on to peer-to-peer recommendation of the product or service. It also enables the business to generate revenue from local interest in the venture.

Cons

In this strategy, association with groups and individuals who are unknown could generate scope for the promotion to be subject to competitor viewing. The strength of the marketing depends on the transmission of enthusiasm between people, with regards to the benefits of the product being sold. The presence of a competitor within the generated link could dampen the desired strain.
Exposure to the Internet, to further the interests of entrepreneurship and generate additional revenue from a global clientèle is not without spam threats, unwanted marketing mix, and also brand dilution.
Hard core selling to benefit from increased commission is widely responsible for many potential buyers being put off.

Viral marketing is capable of generating high product credibility at low cost. The advertising technique is great in the endeavor of making a particular product or service available across physical boundaries with dedicated Internet marketing and shows high efficiency in generating the opportunity for consistent promotions and commissions.

What Happens when Excessive Consumption of Licorice

It's sticky, it's sweet and some folks are repulsed by the taste of it. But for others, black licorice is an alluring indulgence that tempts them to overconsume. You know that eating too much of anything can leave your tummy feeling crummy, but eating large amounts of black licorice can have negative effects beyond mere tummyache.

Potassium Loss

Black licorice contains a substance called glycyrrhizic acid that acts similarly to a hormone called aldosterone. Aldosterone increases the amount of potassium that your body excretes in urine. If you consume large amounts of black licorice over time you may become deficient in potassium -- a condition known as hypokalemia.

Hypokalemia

Hypokalemia is an abnormally low concentration of potassium in your blood. Fruits and vegetables, such as bananas and potatoes, provide dietary potassium. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, hypokalemia is rarely due to insufficient potassium intake. In most cases, potassium loss is the culprit. Since black licorice can increase potassium excretion, it can result in hypokalemia.

Effects of Hypokalemia

If your black licorice consumption is high enough that hypokalemia results, you may experience heart arrhythmias, high blood pressure, water retention, fatigue and congestive heart failure, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. For this reason, the FDA warns against the consumption of large amounts of black licorice within a brief time period.

Positive Effects of Black Licorice

Black licorice consumption isn't all bad. It has been used for centuries by herbalists for conditions ranging from muscle cramps to eczema, according to MedlinePlus. Though there is no actual scientific evidence to back up its purported uses, evidence has supported the use of licorice in combination with other herbs as a possible remedy for heartburn.

Considerations

You don't have to swear off black licorice completely, but in order to avoid complications from this particular candy, you should keep your consumption within certain limits. MedlinePlus states that even for healthy people, consuming 30 g or more each day for a few weeks can result in hypokalemia, high blood pressure, paralysis and even brain damage. If you have heart disease, kidney disease or use a lot of salt, these effects can occur with as little as 5 g or licorice per day. The FDA states that eating a number of 2-oz. bags of black licorice for 14 days or more can result in abnormal heart rhythms, lethargy and congestive heart failure. As with everything else, enjoy your black licorice in moderation.

Halalan 2013 Senatorial Results

This 69% partial results of Halalan 2013 for Senatorial candidates is taken from ABS-CBN website, among the top listed are Grace Poe the daughter of box office King Ferdnando Poe Jr., next is Legarda, Cayatano, Escudero, Binay, Angara, Aquino, Pimintel, Trillianes, Villar, Estrada and Honasan.

Could You be Deficient in Potassium?

If you suffer from anxiety, depression, insomnia, constipation, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney stones, hyperthyroidism, arthritis, obesity, headaches, pain in the eyes, muscle spasms, "restless leg syndrome," fatigue, or muscle tension, to name a few, you may be deficient in potassium.

Potassium is the third most abundant mineral in the body. It is also an electrolyte that regulates blood pressure, water retention, muscle activity, and proper function of every cell in your body. Potassium helps the cells in the body eliminate toxic waste, promotes balanced pH levels, and increases energy.

It is important to note that the FDA limits over-the-counter potassium supplements to 99 mg per serving. This amounts to 2.8% of the FDA's own recommended daily allowance. In addition, the FDA recommended daily allowances for most supplements are widely recognized as being too low.

Supposedly this limit is due to concern over potassium overdose. As you will read further in this article, there is not much reason for this concern. However, the FDA does freely allow medications that deplete potassium to be sold.

You will have to come to your own conclusion on these clear discrepancies. This is just one more reason why each of us needs to take our health into our own hands. It is wise to do necessary research to keep yourself healthy, rather than be forced to research in a panic once you discover first hand how little the main stream medical profession has to offer.

More often than not, doctors just guess through a process of elimination. We know our bodies better than anyone. Please do your own research and follow your own wisdom. There is no way you could do worse than what we currently have offered to us through modern medicine.

Potassium does not work independently. There is a strong relationship between potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Maintaining a balance between these four minerals is crucial to good health. The best way to do this is to increase the overall level of mineral intake in the diet through raw foods.

Due to the typical American diet being high in sodium, it is best to increase the amount of foods high in potassium in your diet. If you have a high sodium intake, and are not eating a balanced diet rich in raw fruits and vegetables, you may also want to take a potassium supplement.

Causes of Potassium Deficiency

There are many factors that can affect the imbalance and deficiency of potassium in the body. These include diet, sodium/potassium ratio in the body, stress, excessive consumption of licorice, and several medications.

Eating a diet of mostly processed foods or foods that have been excessively cooked, results in low potassium intake. Fad diets also play a contributing factor in potassium deficiency.

According to the Eck Institute, "Many people assume that a high sodium/potassium ratio indicates an excessive salt intake. While possibly true, in many instances salt eating has little impact upon the sodium/potassium ratio. A high ratio frequently occurs in people who consume no salt whatsoever! The main causes of a high sodium/potassium ratio are excessive aldosterone secretion due to stress or anger, toxic metals or a zinc and magnesium deficiency. Salt-eating plays a secondary role."(1)

They recommend avoiding table salt because it is a poor quality food. It is best to eat only unrefined pure sea salt which naturally contains minerals. It is not necessary to eliminate all salt from your diet, but rather eat reasonable amounts of high quality sea salt.

It turns out that excessive consumption of licorice can cause potassium deficiency. Not only do some people consume too much licorice, but licorice is also used medicinally to treat tuberculosis, gastritis, hepatitis, and dermatitis. Anyone being treated for these conditions may want to consider taking a potassium supplement.

It is important that anyone with a health condition related to potassium deficiency eliminate the consumption of licorice from their diet. Because hyperthyroidism can cause potassium deficiency, anyone with thyroid disease should not eat licorice as well.

Not only does the lack of potassium in our diet affect many health conditions, but several medications being used to treat certain "diseases" are actually causing potassium deficiency. Examples include: diuretics, laxatives, cortisone, aspirin, cardiac drugs, steroids, and certain therapies used to treat advanced liver disease.

Effects of Potassium Deficiency

There is a correlation between potassium deficiency and anxiety, irritability, anger, and depression. Lack of potassium may also play a role in insomnia, constipation, and too much acidity in the body.

Since lack of potassium may cause edema, it is possible it plays a role in chronic headaches, pain in the eyes, hypertension, and the rapid increase in body weight in those with hyperthyroidism. Potassium helps to regulate blood pressure, and more specifically lowers blood pressure. Getting enough potassium in your diet could be very helpful in preventing and treating heart disease, as well as preventing a stroke for those with heart disease.

A potassium deficiency can lead to lowered urine citrate, which in turn can lead to kidney stones. Some medical experts believe that potassium deficiency may either cause or make worse rheumatoid arthritis. Sufficient amounts of potassium in the diet may also protect you against hypoglycemia and obesity.

Potassium is stored in the muscles and controls both voluntary and involuntary muscles in the body. Therefore, low potassium in the diet contributes to muscle spasms and twitches, muscle fatigue, leg cramps, and "restless leg syndrome."

What to Do

The best way to increase potassium in the body is through diet. Some foods rich in potassium include: bananas, potatoes (baked with skin), prunes, oranges, peaches, tomatoes, raisins, artichokes, lima beans, acorn squash, spinach, sunflower seeds, almonds, molasses, cantaloupe, salmon, and chicken.

According to Dr. Jane Higdon, of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, "There is considerable evidence that a diet supplying at least 4700 mg/day of potassium is associated with decreased risk of stroke, hypertension, osteoporosis, and kidney stones. Fruits and vegetables are among the richest sources of dietary potassium, and a large body of evidence supports the association of increased fruit, vegetable, and nut intakes with reduced risk of chronic disease."(2)

While quite rare, it is possible to overdose on potassium with potentially fatal consequences. Again it is rare, and when it does occur, it is usually caused by underlying medical conditions. Therefore, if you have any of the conditions mentioned in this article or are currently on medication, I strongly encourage you to do further research on potassium deficiency as it relates to your specific condition. Also, it is crucial that you see a natural health care practitioner to help you safely implement more potassium into your diet.

Healthline.com states, "Although there is no established safe upper limit, potassium toxicity appears to develop with an intake of approximately 18,000 mgs and may lead to cardiac arrest."(3) Considering this information, you can see that, while possible, it would be very difficult to overdose on potassium.

Points to Remember

The main point to keep in mind is the total amount of potassium needed in the diet per day, which is at least 4700 mg. Because the sodium intake in the typical American diet is high, ensuring you get enough potassium is very important. While it is best to increase potassium through your diet, supplementation may be necessary to reach adequate amounts.

The link below (in Reference #2), provides some good information regarding potassium, including a chart that contains the amount of potassium found in various foods. This could be very helpful in calculating your daily potassium intake.

While the FDA limit on Potassium supplements is just 99 mg per serving, don't let this discourage you from taking these supplements. Increasing Potassium by any amount can greatly increase the quality of your life.

How D-Link DFE-570TX Quad Port Ethernet Server Works

One common method used to alleviate server bottlenecks involves segmenting the network across multiple NIC's in the server. Figure 1 illustrates a typical setup utilizing four NIC's to segment the network so that if a failure occurs on one segment, it should not affect the other segments. If one segment fails, access to the server is lost for all clients on the failed segment. To get the clients on the failed segment back online the whole server has to be brought downed. Each segment is also limited to the throughput of a single NIC between the server and the switch or hub. During peak access times, bottlenecks can still occur.

DFE-570TX NIC Design

DFE-570TX takes the segmented server concept one step further to provide for optimal use of all network adapters and guaranteed up time for all users across the network. Instead of assigning one network adapter to each segment, adapters are grouped together and treated as one logical adapter. Network traffic can then be balanced across all of the adapters so that a bottleneck does not occur at each network segment. Also, if any one connection or adapter fails, traffic is rebalanced over the remaining adapters so that all connections to the server are maintained. Figure 2 shows the same network with a single DFE-570TX represented by 4 adapters connecting to 4 segments.

Multi-Segment DFE-570TX

DFE-570TX can allow for segmenting the network at the server level. Figure 3 is an example of an Intranet server for which the network has been divided into two separate segments. Engineering and Accounting are on the first segment and Sales and remote users are on the second segment. Unlike the first example, this design provides for maximum throughput and fault tolerance for each segment. Each segment consists of an array of two network adapters with failover and load balancing being provided within each segment.

DFE-570TX Driver Architecture

DFE-570TX for Windows NT is designed to be easily installed and unintrusive to the operating system. It is designed as an NT Intermediate NDIS driver similar to other network drivers for NT and that it sits on top of existing NIC drivers. The DFE-570TX driver shields the multiple adapters from NT and creates one virtual driver for each network segment installed.

In Figure 4 illustrated below, two network segments are created with each containing an array of two adapters. The DFE-570TX driver borrows the MAC address of the primary card in each array and advertises this single address to the NT Protocols stack. The Protocol Stack sees only one port to the network thus creating a virtual port for the operating system.

Figure 4: NIC Express Architecture

The NDIS driver handles all software functions for load balancing and dynamic failover in the NT Kernel. Kernel mode operation insures maximum performance with little to no latency. Also by operating in the kernel mode, DFE-570TX does not affect applications running in user mode thereby making compatibility issues moot.

D-Link DFE-580TX Quad Port Dual Speed Ethernet Server

The D-Link DFE-580TX is a 4-port PCI 10/100Mb Dual Speed Ethernet Server Adapter. Offering features such as aggregate bandwidth up to 800Mb, dynamic fail over, and SNMP it is targeted at IS managers with Windows NT servers who wish to gain more power and control over their network infrastructure and expand the bandwidth pipe to their servers.

Designed to meet the demands of both local and Internet data serving, the DFE-580TX provides 4 10/100 NWay ports on a single 32-bit PCI card.

The DFE-580TX gives a new level of control to the IS manager over the critical data pipe to his server. With four independent MAC addresses it is capable of providing either an aggregated, load-balanced 800Mb pipe to the server for maximum speed, or two dynamic fail-over 400Mb pipes to provide network connection redundancy and ensure maximum server up time.

SNMP management is present to allow the IS manager to effectively monitor mission critical servers.
