Zucchini Health Benefits

Zucchini is often referred to as a summer squash, and comes in two colors - yellow and green. This versatile vegetable/ fruit is extremely beneficial for our health, since it contains many nutrients, like vitamin A, manganese, potassium, folate, etc., in adequate amounts. It has fewer calories as well - only 15 - 20 calories in 100 gm of Zucchini - so if you are hungry, then this is the perfect food, since it will fill your stomach without expanding your waistline or adding love handles. There are many health benefits of Zucchini, and in the following paragraphs, we'll find out what they are.

Benefits of Including Zucchini in Your Diet

✔ Calories in Zucchini are low, so they are a great substitute for fattening foods, i.e., those that have a high calorie count. They will take care of your hunger without you having to worry about piling up the pounds.

✔ Zucchini aids in digestion, when eaten as a side dish with a heavy meal, since it contains magnesium. Steam the Zucchini and add salt for some taste if you wish.

✔ Zucchini is a great way to beat the summer heat. It helps in keeping your body cool, when the temperatures are soaring. Eating it raw is also good.

✔ Zucchini contains Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Magnesium, which are great for boosting our immune systems. A strong immune system helps ward off common diseases.

✔ Zucchini plays an important role in fighting multiple sclerosis, and reduces the risk of high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks.

✔ Zucchini has a lot of fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin C, which are crucial in reducing the cholesterol levels in our bodies. The vitamins are also amazing anti-inflammatory agents, which help in preventing anti-inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, and asthma.

✔ Incorporation of Zucchini in the diet reduces the risk of cancer, because the fibers in Zucchini help in removing the toxins from the body and prevent them from accumulating in the colon. Accumulation of carcinogenic toxins in the colon is mainly what leads to many types of cancers.

✔ Zucchini also helps in reducing the symptoms of benign prostate hypertrophy (BHP), which occurs in males and causes urinary complications and also sexual complications due to enlargement of the prostate gland.

✔ The Vitamin C and Lutein present in Zucchini also keep the eyes healthy and sharp. Vitamin C is also good for warding off asthma, and other diseases associated with lack of Vitamin C, like scurvy.

✔ Vitamin A helps prevent tooth decay, while the overall nutritional factor helps reduce the symptoms of aging to some extent.

✔ Zucchini is also believed to aid memory, help in regeneration of brain cells, and it also protects the cells from damage due to over oxidation.

✔ Zucchini has a high content of water. The potassium in it is an electrolyte which is good for the heart. So Zucchini provides a lot of hydration to the body without the need to constantly consume liquids/ electrolytes throughout the day.

✔ Zucchini also contains adequate amounts of phosphorous and magnesium, which is why it is very good for strengthening the bones. It helps, to some extent, in preventing brittleness of bones due to old age.

Another thing to keep in mind while buying and eating zucchini, is that the color will tell you how rich it is in nutrients. Dark green zucchinis have more nutrients than the lighter ones, so pick out the darker shades. Also, while eating the Zucchini, do not skin it and dispose the rind, since it contains an anti oxidant called 'beta-carotene' which helps our cells, and adds to its many health benefits. Just wash it properly before consuming or using. Eat healthy, stay healthy!

Soy Foods That Are Fermented

If you're looking for fermented soy foods - those found to provide the health benefits cited by research studies - the best place to look would be the refrigerated section of your grocery store. Here you'll find the following:
  • Tempeh is a type of fermented soybean found in solid, cake-like sheets that can be cut into any size you'd like. It can be easily added to a pasta sauce. Baked or grilled it can be combined with melted cheese on whole grain breads to make a delicious sandwich. Tempeh with vegetables is great in healthy stir-fries.
  • Natto is another type of fermented soybean that shaped in smaller, bite-sized chunks. Natto makes a great addition to soups and broths and makes an easy topping for rice dishes. It's a little stickier than tempeh, and also a little sweeter.
  • Miso is a thick, fermented paste that can be made from soy beans (but read the label carefully as it is sometimes made from barley or rice). You'll usually find miso pre-packaged in a plastic tub. Miso makes a great base for soup stock, and its rich broth works well with vegetables, noodles, and other soy foods including tofu and natto.
  • Pickled tofu, which is also sometimes called tofu cheese. You may be less likely to find this fermented soy product in grocery stores but look for it at Asian foods market or a large-scale natural foods groceries. Most of the tofu available in supermarkets has been coagulated into its thickened, moist, cake-like form, but it has not been fermented. Pickled tofu is an exception, and it's been fermented and aged like an aged cheese. Like other fermented soy products, it makes a great addition to soups.
In the Asian foods section of the grocery, you can find yet another fermented soy product, tamari (shoyu), a traditional, fermented version of soy sauce. Most soy sauce you will find in the supermarket has not been traditionally fermented, and you should look specifically for tamari if you want the full benefits of a fermented soy product. Of course, you will not be consuming this fermented product in the same amount as tempeh, natto, miso, or pickled tofu since you will be using it more as a flavoring and condiment. Even so, you will be getting some important benefits from this fermented soy food.

As you can see, soy milk is not on this list. This popular soy-containing beverage is not usually made from fermented soybeans.

With all of the above fermented soy products, you will be getting a highly digestible form of soybean that includes some unique nutritional benefits not found in non-fermented soy foods. For more details, read our write-ups on tempeh, miso, and soy sauce.

While there appear to be special health benefits from the consumption of traditionally fermented soy foods, non-fermented soy foods can still make a very nourishing contribution to your diet. We definitely like some of the unique health-supporting aspects of fermented soy foods (and other fermented foods as well), but we encourage you to consider all types of whole soy products and their great potential for improving health and nourishment. (Please note that we prefer organic soybeans and foods made from them since they are not grown from genetically modified seeds.)

Health Benefits of Drinking Camel Milk

Eminent scientists and researchers from different countries have proven that camel milk has numerous health benefits. It has been touted since ages that the milk of this desert animal has endured nomads and Bedouins during their long wandering odyssey. Domestication of camels and camel farming are extensively carried out in dry and arid regions like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kenya, etc. In these places, you will find camel milk and its derivatives being readily sold in departmental stores and supermarkets. Though it is still an existing product and not so popular across the world, yet in many parts of the US, camel farming has been set up to boost the sale of camel milk. Importance is given to enhance supply of camel milk, only due to its supremely high nutritional value.

Composition of Camel Milk

Its composition is almost similar to a human mother's milk. Being enriched with proteins and vitamins, it is a perfect dietary supplement for healthy as well as malnourished children and adults. The key vitamins include vitamin A, B and B2. It contains essential minerals like potassium, zinc, manganese, copper, magnesium, sodium, and iron. The presence of sodium renders it slightly salty. When compared to cow's milk, the lactose and fat content of camel milk is much lower than the former, while vitamin C and iron content are 3 times and 10 times more than cow's milk, respectively. Its nutritional value is enhanced with the presence of polyunsaturated fatty acids, linoleic acid and volatile acids. As immune factors are present in its milk, you can have it regularly to strengthen your immune system. Last but not the least, camel milk also contains specific antimicrobial elements, which are indeed useful for the body.

Health Benefits of Camel Milk
  • General Health

From the composition itself, you can very well estimate how nutritious camel milk is. The wide range of nutritional elements present in camel milk improve the general health and resistance of the body. It strengthens bones and is therefore, suggested to people suffering from calcium deficiency and bone disorders, especially in case of osteoporosis. Drinking camel milk solves sexual issues, like impotency, lack of libido and suppressed sexual drive. It is an excellent health drink for people suffering from nutrient deficiency and is safe for lactose-tolerant people. In general, you can have camel milk to stay fit and energetic.
  • Ensures Immunity

As already said, camel milk contains antibodies and immunoglobulins; it therefore, makes the body resistant against a wide range of diseases and invasion of foreign particles. When you drink camel milk on a regular basis, your body naturally acquires an improved immune potential. The basic function of the immunoglobulins is to protect the body against autoimmune disorders, allergies and several types of bacterial, fungal and viral infections. You can have camel milk every day, simply for increasing your power of immunity.
  • Diabetes Management

Drinking camel milk helps in controlling type 1 diabetes. From case studies and clinical trials conducted by scientists, it has been established that camel milk contains insulin and insulin-like proteins which have an anti-diabetic effect in the body. A research publication states that, "Clinical trials in humans with diabetes type 1 have shown that daily consumption of 0.5 liter camel milk reduces the need for insulin medication by an average of 30%." Thus, consumption of camel milk can probably reduce the dosage of insulin needed for diabetes patients.
  • Recovery from Autism

Tests were performed on individuals suffering from autism to prove its efficacy in eliminating health complications associated with this disorder. The research thesis of Dr. Yosef Shabo and Dr. Reuven Yagil explains that, camel milk being devoid of beta-casein and beta-lactoglobulin, is not detrimental to autistic people. Furthermore, the immunoglobulins and protective proteins present in it, aid in development of the brain. They conducted a survey regarding the effects of camel milk on autistic children of different age groups. The results of the case studies were quite convincing and proved that camel milk actually showed improvement in their communication skills and functions of the brain.
You must take your doctor's advice before drinking it for the purpose of controlling diabetes or as a cure for any kind of health disorders. I would suggest you to check that the milk comes from a well-controlled herd and the product has been pasteurized properly. You can also have cheese and butter manufactured from camel milk. And today, owing to its immense medicinal value, it is the key ingredient in a wide range cosmetic products and dermatological creams.

Master Cleanse Diet

Lemon cayenne pepper diet or master cleanse diet is a cleansing program that removes harmful toxins from the body, and aids in weight loss. It was produced by Stanley Burroughs in 1941, and later became popular through Peter Glickman's book Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days, that promoted Burroughs' diet plan to the modern audience. The diet mainly comprises freshwater, pure lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and natural maple syrup.

The medicinal value of the detox diet mainly comes from a chemical called capsaicin. This ingredient not only gives heat to the cayenne peppers, but also minimizes the platelet sickness, and relieves pain. The detox diet is rich in vitamin E, vitamin C, and carotenoids, that help in improving your overall health. Before going into details of other health benefits of the diet, let's see how to make the detox drink.
  • 2 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon (don't use concentrates, and drink mixes as they contain preservatives)
  • 2 tbsp. organic or natural maple syrup
  • 1/10 tsp. cayenne pepper, as per taste
  • 8 oz. freshwater
Mix the above mentioned ingredients, and enjoy either hot or cold.

Health Benefits

Due to excessive intake of processed and junk food, very little nutrients enter our bodies. Hence, our bodies have to really work hard to get rid of these low nutritional valued food. Also, ingestion of numerous chemicals and toxins in the body while breathing are deleterious, and keep getting built up over the years. Therefore, the detox diet not only gives us a break from the solid food intake but also cleanse our bodies naturally.
  • The diet increases the body's metabolic rate and improves the flow of stomach secretion that helps to sooth the digestive tract. Cayenne Pepper also helps in treating weak digestion, ulcers, and some digestive ailments like dyspepsia.
  • Along with removing toxins from the body, it reduces the cravings for drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and junk food. Coffee, tea, colas, and other beverages lose their appeal in front of the marvels of this lemonade diet.
  • Regular intake of the detox drink boosts your energy levels, helps you to lose up to 20 pounds in a short period of time, make you look younger and gives freshness like never before.
  • The acid in lemons and the cayenne peppers treat different health-related problems like poor circulation, heart disease, sore throat, etc. In fact, one of the health benefit of cayenne pepper is that it is considered as a first aid relief for people suffering from a heart attack.
  • It also helps in relieving pain like chronic pain, and tooth and head aches.
Following this diet is a challenge though, as it is difficult to give up the comfort of food, and the caffeine in beverages like tea and coffee. But due to the different health benefits associated with it, it is worth getting through this rough part. It is recommended to drink nearly 6 - 8 glasses of this detox drink per day during the diet. For better results, follow the diet for 7 - 10 days. You can also extend it to 14 - 16 days. The maximum recommended extension is 40 days. However, always consult your dietitian or a health practitioner before starting the diet. The diet will not only help you cleanse your system, but will also enable you to lose weight, and leave you feeling fit.

The 8 Health Benefits of Yellow Squash

Yellow squash is a type of summer squash that grows all over the United States and is easily found at local farmers markets, roadside vegetable stands and grocery stores. Yellow squash is rich in nutritional benefits and can be used in a wide variety of dishes. Add it to stews, salads and soups to avail yourself of this nutritious vegetable.

Here are eight health benefits of this versatile vegetable.

Low in Calories
A cup of yellow squash contains only about 36 calories, 7 grams of carbohydrates, less than one gram of fat, and a gram of protein. It is also cholesterol-free. The few calories it contains come mostly from its carbohydrate content, which is also particularly low. If you are trying to lose weight, yellow squash is a great choice to replace higher calorie vegetables like potatoes and corn.

Vitamin Rich
Yellow squash is a brilliant source of vitamin C and a very good source of magnesium, vitamin A (particularly in its concentration of carotenoids, including beta-carotene), fiber, folate, copper, riboflavin and phosphorus.

It is also abundant in potassium, providing 345.60 milligrams per serving. Potassium is a key electrolyte in the balance of fluids and also provides muscle energy.

In addition, it is high in manganese, a mineral which helps the body process fats, carbohydrates, and glucose.

Cancer Prevention
Yellow squash is abundant in antioxidants that keep free radicals at bay. With its high beta-carotene content, yellow squash is a great source of protection from pollutants and chemicals that lead to cancer. It is also high in vitamin C, which helps prevent premature aging and cancer as well as inhibiting cell division.

Heart Health
Yellow squash contains negligable fat and no measurable cholesterol. One cup of squash contains about 0.2 g of fat. Cutting down on your fat and cholesterol intake is a giant step towards helping reduce your risk of heart disease.

The magnesium found in yellow squash has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Along with its potassium content, magnesium is good for reducing high blood pressure. The vitamin C and beta-carotene levels in yellow squash may also aid in preventing the oxidation of cholesterol. As cholesterol in its oxidized form builds up in the walls of blood vessels, such nutrients may reduce the development of atherosclerosis. The presence of the vitamin folate in yellow squash is required by our bodies to remove an unhealthy metabolic byproduct called homocysteine, which may contribute to heart attack and stroke risk.

While the nutrients in squash combine to make a heart healthy, disease-preventing food, yellow squash is also particularly rich in fiber, the perfect ingredient for lowering high cholesterol levels and reducing the potential for atherosclerosis and heart disease.

Colon Health
At 2.52 grams per serving, the abundant fiber content of yellow squash is indispensable for the excretion of toxins from the body and is an extremely important nutrient for the colon's health since it promotes regularity and adds bulk to the stool.

Prostate Health
Yellow squash has been shown to alleviate the symptoms of a condition named benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH. A man with BPH suffers from a problematically enlarged prostate gland, leading to difficulties with both urinary and sexual function.

Eye Health
Yellow squash is particularly high in concentrations of beta carotene and lutein. Dietary lutein helps to prevent the onset of cataracts and macular degeneration, which often leads to blindness. A cup of yellow squash provides about 135 micrograms of beta carotene and 2,400 micrograms of lutein.

Healthy Bones
Yellow Squash contains high levels of manganese and vitamin C. Manganese aids in maintaining healthy bone structure, calcium absorption, enzyme creation, and bone building. It also contributes to the mineral density of the spinal column.

Vitamin C aids in the production of collagen, which is essential for the building of bone mass, and magnesium is indispensible to the health of joints and bones. Iron, folate, zinc and phosphorous found in yellow squash all contribute to the mineral health of bones, and help fortify against osteoporosis.

Pineapples Surprising Health Benefits

Pineapples are believed to have originated in Brazil. Christopher Columbus and his crew were thought to be the first Europeans to taste this delicious fruit and export it back to Europe. It was later grown in hothouses throughout Europe and originally was a very expensive fruit that only the nobles and royal families could afford to enjoy. Pineapple gets its name from a description of the reproductive organs of conifer trees, known as their pinecones.

A man named James Dole, living in Hawaii was first to recognize a global market for pineapple and cultivated vast plantations of pineapple to be exported to the world, mostly as a canned product. South East Asia is now the main supplier of pineapples to the global market. In early historical America, pineapples were often given as a gift of friendship. This article discusses the nutritional properties of pineapple and the health benefits of consuming this delicious fruit.

Nutritional Properties of Pineapples

Pineapples are a rich source of nutrients and low in calories at only 80 calories per cup. It is a rich source of dietary fiber including pectin. They contain natural sugars (fructose) that do not cause a spike in insulin when consumed. Insulin spiking foods initially cause a burst of energy but you quickly crash after eating them and need to refuel with food again. They also contain powerful antioxidants including vitamin C and have a small percentage vitamin A and beta-carotene.

They are a rich source of the B vitamins including folates, thiamin, pyridoxine and riboflavin. From a mineral perspective they are a good source of copper, manganese and potassium. It also contains small amounts of protein, healthy fats, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron and zinc. From a chemical perspective, pineapples contain bromelain, malic acid, alpha- hydroxyl acid and citric acid. Bromelain has been proven to be a mild anti-inflammatory, is a blood thinner and also exhibits anti-cancer properties.

Health Benefits of Pineapple
  • Powerful Antioxidant

A cup of pineapple contains 131 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Being a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C helps to rid the body of free radicals. Free radicals are the by product of food metabolism and they can cause the inflammation of healthy tissue in the body. Inflammation is the precursor to many serious disease processes including heart disease and cancer. Vitamin C also protects our DNA from damage by blood toxins and pollutants. It also helps to boost the immune system, reducing the incidence of coughs, colds, influenza and infections.
  • Treatment for Gout

Gout is thought to be caused by a build up of uric acid crystals in the blood causing extreme pain in the large toes of the foot. Consumption of pineapple has been shown to decrease uric acid levels in the blood, effectively preventing painful gout flare-ups.
  • Anti-Inflammatory

Bromelain, a chemical in fresh pineapple exhibits mild anti-inflammatory properties. Consuming pineapple can help treat mild forms of arthritis, sports injuries and inflammation post surgery. By reducing inflammation, pain levels are also reduced.
  • Healthy Bones and Cartilage

One cup of fresh pineapple contains 76 percent of the daily recommended dosage of manganese. Manganese is important for the growth of healthy bones and cartilage. It is also required for collagen formation and wound healing. Manganese rich foods like pineapple can be used to ensure healthy, glowing, facial complexion and to accelerate healing times of wounds.
  • Weight Loss and Weight Maintenance

Pineapples are low in calories per cup and can be included in any weight loss diet. They are considered a nutrient dense food with few calories. A source of fiber, when pineapple is consumed it takes longer to digest in the stomach, causing a feeling of fullness for longer. This effectively stems hunger and prevents the risk of snacking on unhealthy foods. Fiber also helps to prevent constipation and stimulates the bowels towards the elimination process, aiding to remove fat from the body. Being 87 percent water, pineapples also contribute to stemming off hunger, increases your water intake and it is well known that consuming water regularly throughout the day can also lead to weight loss.
  • Beauty Treatment

Crushed fresh pineapple can be used as a mask for the face and to soothe and soften the feet. The vitamin C in pineapples can help slow the ageing process reducing the prevalence of fine lines and wrinkles. Many of today’s anti-wrinkle creams contain vitamin C, bromelain and alpha-hydroxyl acid as found in pineapples. Concentration levels of these two ingredients are higher in commercial creams compared to pineapples but masks made with crushed pineapples can have some beneficial effects for the skin. Pineapple masks can cause a rash in some sensitive people hence it is recommended to test a small area of skin first, before applying liberally. Pineapple is also has a mild exfoliating effect on the skin and can be used to help remove calluses and smooth rough skin of the feet. After soaking the feet in crushed pineapple, use a pumice stone to remove the dead skin.
  • Other

There are some early studies showing that pineapples may help prevent heart disease, cancer, lead toxicity, cataracts, stroke and lower blood pressure. Although studies are only in their infancy, pineapples are showing some promise in these areas.
In conclusion, fresh pineapple is best consumed to retain the nutrient benefits. Cooking destroys much of its health benefiting nutrients and chemicals. Beware that many canned products contain added sugar which is not as healthy as fresh pineapple. When choosing a fresh pineapple to consume, choose one that is considerably heavy for its size and one that has dark green leaves.

Once the pineapple has been sliced, it keeps for up to 3 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Eating pineapple makes a healthy snack, one you can consume without guilt and without packing on the kilos. You will also know that you are nurturing your body with many of the nutrients it requires and providing yourself with some protection from many disease processes.

Ginseng Tea Health Benefits

Ginseng is a perennial plant with a fleshy root, which is used for medicinal purposes. It is believed to have originated in the mountains of Manchuria in China, and has been in use for some 5000 years. It was called 'Ren Shen' by the ancient Chinese people. 'Ren Shen' means 'Man Root', and refers to the human-like shape of the Ginseng root. The Chinese had tremendous faith in ginseng, and considered it a sort of rejuvenating, cure-all herb for a variety of ailments.

You can make herbal tea from the fleshy root of the ginseng plant. This tea is said to have many healing and energy-giving properties.

You can use fresh or dried roots for preparing the tea. These days, ginseng tea is a popular herbal drink all over the world, and is used by people for its rejuvenating properties.

Although, proponents of alternative medicine claim that ginseng can cure a lot of illnesses, till date, there is no substantial evidence to prove the effectiveness of this herb. Even so, a great many people swear by the ginseng tea, and consume it on a regular basis. As per the exponents of this herb, there are numerous benefits of this tea, which are discussed below:
  • Ginseng may help stimulate the production of antibody-like protein, which helps in fighting colds.
  • It may also aid in regulating blood sugar levels in diabetics.
  • The ginseng root contains ginsenosides, a compound that stimulates the release of ACTH, that increases alertness and concentration.
  • It is also believed to improve the quality of sleep as well as boost the overall mood.
  • Regular consumption of this herbal tea is seen to help in fighting fatigue and lack of energy. Ginseng has the potential to increase the energy levels in cancer patients.

  • Benefits of ginseng tea include its power to alleviate discomfort associated with menstruation.
  • It is also believed to lower the levels of LDL cholesterol.
Types of Ginseng

There are two main species of ginseng, and they are Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) that is found in China, Japan, and Korea, and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) that grows mainly in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Georgia, Oklahoma, British Columbia, and Ontario. There is a third variety called red ginseng or Korean ginseng, which is nothing more than processed Asian ginseng. There is another variety called Siberian ginseng, which is not a true ginseng, but another plant (Eleutherococcus senticosus) with almost similar medicinal properties. It contains chemical compounds called eleutherosides, instead of ginsenosides.

You can buy ginseng roots as whole or in the powder form. You may also get sliced and dried ginseng roots or even ginseng tea bags. Sometimes, the leaves of ginseng plant are also used, however, they are not considered as effective as the root. Cultivated root is available as red and white Ginseng. In both cases, ginseng plants are grown for about 6 years before their roots are harvested. The difference lies in the way the roots are processed for use. To make white ginseng, the root is peeled and sun-dried. The dried root then, takes the yellowish-white color. To make red ginseng, the unpeeled root undergoes the steaming and drying process. The reddish-brown color of the root is obtained during the steaming process.

Side Effects

As there is no solid scientific support to back the said benefits of the herb, it is always better to consult your health care professional before using it. The herb is said to cause no side effects, if taken in prescribed doses. However, side effects may occur, if it is taken in excess. Interactions with certain drugs, like, antidepressants, blood-thinning medications, diuretics, and drugs for maintaining blood pressure and blood sugar levels, are possible. The herb should be utilized only under the strict supervision of a qualified herbal practitioner. Pregnant and lactating women, or those with endometriosis and uterine fibroids must also refrain from taking ginseng.

Ginseng tea is soothing and relaxing, and its regular intake can aid sleeping disorders. However, it is important not to have it in excess, as it might have negative effects on your health.

Nutritional benefits of Bananas

Bananas are a unique fruit. They are creamy, sweet or savory, and safely preserved by nature in their own packaging - the banana peel. Related to the lily and the orchid, this fruit originated in Malaysia. Today, the major banana producing countries are Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Brazil.

Bananas for Your Health

Bananas and nutrition go hand in hand. They are great sources of an array of nutrients, with B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, potassium, manganese and magnesium. One banana also provides eleven percent of the daily recommended requirement of fiber.

Toss this yellow fruit, sliced or chopped on just about anything - the nutrition in bananas nourishes and protects the most vital organ. Research has shown that a high fiber diet significantly lowers the risk of heart disease - the number one cause of death in America. Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, helps with brain function, energy conversion, and along with folate and B12, it works to reduce homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid, which in high quantities is connected to a higher risk of heart attack.

The health benefits of eating bananas also include protection from stomach ulcers and digestive health. To combat the harsh effect of stomach acids, phytochemicals stimulate cells in the stomach lining to create a thicker mucus barrier. Protease inhibitors found in bananas help to eliminate harmful bacteria found in the digestive tract.

Bananas are also a good source of prebiotics - undigestible sugars which provide the nourishment for probiotics. Probiotics are an essential part of our health, defending the body from harmful microbes and improving nutrient absorption.

The nutritional value of bananas also supports kidney health. High in antioxidant phenolic compounds, also found in high quantities in root vegetables, eating bananas on a regular basis greatly reduces the risk of kidney cancer.

Potassium Content of Bananas

Potassium is required for a number of functions - it is the third most prevalent mineral found in the body. How much potassium is in bananas? One piece of fruit supplies twenty-three percent of the daily recommended amount of potassium, with 800 milligrams.

The potassium content of bananas can help prevent high blood pressure and normalize heart function. Studies have linked a diet high in potassium rich foods with a lowered risk of stroke. Potassium also plays a vital role in the health of kidneys, the brain, and muscle tissue. Signs of a potassium deficiency include muscle cramping, fatigue, weak muscles, severe headaches, and high blood pressure.

Integrating Bananas into a Healthy Diet

Bananas are one of the easiest foods to make into a regular part of your diet, and the nutrition in bananas makes it well worth the effort. Add sliced bananas to cereal or yogurt; banana and peanut butter sandwiches are a classic for children; or simply take a banana as a snack-on-the-go.

Bananas are an ideal smoothie base for their creamy texture and sweet flavor. Try a healthy banana smoothie for breakfast - blend one cup milk, one banana, one tablespoon wheat germ, four or five ice cubes, and two tablespoons honey.

Would you believe you still get the health benefits of eating bananas when you fry them in brown sugar and butter and use them as a topping for ice cream or pancakes? Its true, you do. Eat bananas for your health, and have a good time doing it.

The 8 Health Benefits of Eggplant

The eggplant, known as aubergine in France and England, is thought of as a vegetable but is actually a berry of the nightshade (Solanaceae) plant. It is native to the Indian Subcontinent. Here are 8 health benefits of eggplant:

Antioxidant Activity
Eggplant contains several phytonutrients with good antioxidant activity: caffeic, chlorogenic acid and the flavonoid, nasunin. Nasunin is a powerful antioxidant that has been proven to fight free radical activity in the body. Animal studies have found that nasunin protects lipids (fats) in brain cell membranes. Chlorogenic acid is also considered a potent antioxidant with many proven benefits.

Heart Health
Animal studies show that eggplant may help lower overall cholesterol in the body and help to improve blood flow. The antioxidant compounds in eggplant help to prevent oxidative stress to the cardiovascular system and thus reduce the risk of heart attack and heart disease. Eggplant is also a good source of fiber, which is needed to maintain good cardiovascular health.

Brain Health
Eggplant contains nasunin, an antioxidant anthocyanin, which may help to promote healthy brain function. Nasunin protects brain fats through scavenging free radicals that target brain lipids.

Fiber
One cup of eggplant contains about 8% the DV of dietary fiber. Fiber can aid in digestion and weight loss. It helps to balance the metabolism. The fiber in eggplant helps to reduce cholesterol and relax blood vessels, which suggests it may play a productive role in maintaining good heart health.

High In B Vitamins
Eggplant is rich in vitamins B1, B3 and B6. B vitamins play an essential role in the proper function of the central nervous system, energy production, hormone balance and healthy liver function. They are also believed to help balance blood sugar and reduce cholesterol.

Weight Loss
Maintaining the proper DV of fiber and B vitamins can be a great way to contribute to healthy weight loss. Fiber promotes a healthy, active metabolism and B vitamins can help the body to process fat. Eggplant is also rich with nutrients while offering very few calories (only 19 per cup), which makes it a great addition to an active, effective weight loss program.

Bone Health
Eggplant contains many of the minerals needed to maintain strong, healthy bones: manganese, potassium, magnesium and copper.

Cancer Prevention
Many doctors and scientists believe that a compound in eggplant can effectively treat certain types of skin cancer. The phytochemical, known as BEC5, is believed to kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells. BEC5 cream is purported to have worked in thousands of cases, mainly in Australia and England with a success rate of nearly 100% when used for 12 weeks. There are conflicting reports as to its effectiveness and the FDA has not approved its use in the U.S. It is not known whether obtaining BEC5 from eating eggplant will help to prevent or treat cancer.

Must Try the Pescetarian Diet

The pescetarian diet is a diet without meat except for seafood. It is an alternative to the vegetarian diet which allows you to get omega 3’s which are healthy for the heart. The name pescetarian comes from the word ‘pesco’ which in Spanish means fish. Pescetarians can enjoy any kind of seafood which includes salmon, flounder, prawns, haddock, crab, mussels, shrimp, tuna and clams, just to name a few.

It is a diet that most people find easy to follow and is considered a very healthy diet. Islanders around the world exist on a predominantly seafood diet, together with fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products including eggs, the islanders have been found to live longer healthier lives than their counterparts who are predominantly red meat eaters. This article discusses the health benefits of the pescetarian diet, the advantages and disadvantages.

The Health Benefits of the Pescetarian Diet
  • Prevents Heart Disease, Heart Attack and Stroke

Pescetarians usually easily consume enough omega 3's from eating fish products for optimal health. Omega 3’s help to prevent the build up of fatty plaques on the walls of arteries. These fatty plaques are caused by high levels of bad cholesterol in the blood. Red meat eaters are at high risk of bad cholesterol causing problems. Bad cholesterol in the blood causes high blood pressure due to the heart having to work so much harder to pump blood through the arteries with fatty plaques. Eventually these fatty plaques can occlude the flow of blood through these arteries leading to heart attack and or stroke.
  • Prevents Obesity and Aids in Weight Loss

People who follow a pescetarian diet over the long term lose weight. The calorie content of fish products, vegetables, fruit and low fat dairy products are generally lower. By avoiding saturated fats, the body uses these healthy, low calorie foods for energy rather than fat storage. Pescetarians need to avoid high carbohydrate rich foods and high sugar content food as well. Sugar and carbohydrates need to be derived from fruits and vegetables rather than processed foods including potato chips, sweets and fast foods for example. Fish products are high in protein which is needed for many body functions. Vitamin and mineral content is easily derived from fruits, vegetables and fish products.
  • Lowers the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is caused by the pancreas no longer being able to release enough insulin to allow sugar molecules in the blood to be absorbed into cells. It can also be caused by cells becoming insensitive to insulin. Insulin is needed to pass sugar molecules in the blood into cells to be used for energy. When insulin no longer provides this effect, sugar molecules cause damage to the lining of blood vessel walls which leads to disease and also causes sugar to be stored as fat rather than be used for energy. Pescetarian diets are low in sugar which helps prevent low insulin levels in the blood, low insulin sensitivity and increased fat storage.
  • Lowers the Risk of Cancer

The pescetarian diet lowers the risk of cancer as the foods eaten have shown only to be of benefit to health rather than being associated with disease and cancer. By eliminating red meat, poultry, lamb and pork from the diet, cancer risk decreases. Fish, vegetables, fruit and low fat dairy products provide the body with nutrients it needs rather than high saturated fats and the accumulation of toxic waste products that can be harmful to the body, unless completely eliminated from the body. The incidence of cancer diagnosis has been shown to be low in those people who adopt a pescetarian diet.
Disadvantages of the Pescetarian Diet

Many farmed fish products have been shown to have high levels of mercury. Consequently farmed fish products should be avoided as mercury is toxic to the body. Try to buy fish that comes from the wild, rather than farmed produce. Smaller fish species for consumption tend to have lower levels of mercury rather than larger species. Some people on a pescetarian diet may need to supplement with high protein alternatives such as soy products to ensure you are getting enough protein, calcium, vitamin A and D and B vitamins. Including low fat milk or alternative milk products such as soy, almond, rice, oat and hemp beverages can ensure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals. A daily vitamin and mineral supplement may be required also.

In conclusion, the pescetarian diet is flexible compared to the vegan and vegetarian diets. It is considered a healthier diet than one that completely eliminates meats and or dairy products. Don’t expect to see health benefits initially as the body has to adjust to the diet before results can be seen. Fish is always a healthier alternative to red meats, poultry, lamb and pork. By eliminating saturated fats from your diet, you will be well on the way to optimal health and enjoying the new you.

Health Benefits of Orange

The orange is one of the most common and popular fruit. It is well-liked because of its easy availability all year round, dense nutrition, and it tastes good.

Oranges are round citrus fruits ranging in diameter from about 2 to 3 inches, with finely texturized skins that are orange in color.

Its pulp is also orange in color and very succulent, surrounded by its skin which can vary in thickness depending on its variety.

There are oranges that are sweet, bitter and sour, so you'll need to know the variety you're buying. The sweet variety are usually more fragrant. They include Valencia, Navel and Jaffa oranges which are ideal for making juices.

In the orange family, there are also the Mandarin oranges (with loose skin), Clementine (loose skin and seedless), the tangerine (orange-red Mandarin), the Minneola (cross between tangerine and grapefruit), the blood orange that has dark burgundy colored flesh, kumquat, and a few other lesser known ones.

The Mandarin oranges are especially popular with the Chinese as the word "orange" in Chinese sounds like "gold" or "good luck". Come the Lunar New Year, the Chinese buy oranges by the boxes to be given away to express good wishes for the new year.

Nutritional Benefits

Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C and flavonoids. One orange (130 grams) supplies nearly 100 percent of the recommended daily dietary intake of vitamin C.

When you eat a whole orange, it provides good dietary fiber. Leave in the albedo (the white matter under the peel) as much as possible as the albedo contains the highest amount of valuable bioflavonoids and other anti-cancer agents.

In addition, oranges are a good source of vitamin A, the B vitamins, amino acids, beta-carotene, pectin, potassium, folic acid, calcium, iodine, phosphorus, sodium, zinc, manganese, chlorine and iron.

Health Benefits

An orange packs over 170 different phytonutrients and more than 60 flavonoids, many of which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour and blood clot inhibiting properties, as well as strong anti-oxidant effects.

The combination of the high amount of anti-oxidant (vitamin C) and flavonoids in oranges makes it one of the best fruits in helping to promote optimal health.

Arteriosclerosis: Regularly consuming vitamin C retards the development of hardening of the arteries.

Cancer prevention: A compound in oranges called liminoid, has been found to help fight cancers of the mouth, skin, lung, breast, stomach and colon. The high vitamin C content also acts as a good anti-oxidant that protects cells from damages by free radicals.

Cholesterol: The alkaloid synephrine found under the orange peel can reduce the liver's production of cholesterol. Whereas the anti-oxidant fights oxidative stress that is the main culprit in oxidizing the LDLs in our blood.

Constipation: Even though the orange "tastes acidic", it actually has an alkaline effect in the digestive system and helps stimulate the digestive juices, relieving constipation.

Damaged sperm, repair: An orange a day is sufficient for a man to keep his sperm healthy. Vitamin C, an anti-oxidant, protects sperm from genetic damage that may cause a birth defect.

Heart disease: A high intake of flavonoids and vitamin C has been known to halve the risk of heart diseases.

High blood pressure: Studies have shown that a flavonoid called hesperidin in oranges can lower high blood pressure.

Immune system: The strong content of vitamin C stimulates white cells to fight infection, naturally building a good immune system.

Kidney stones, prevent: Drinking orange juice daily can significantly drop the risk of formation of calcium oxalate stones in the kidney.

Skin: The anti-oxidant in orange help protect the skin from free radical damage known to cause signs of aging.

Stomach ulcer: Consuming vitamin C rich foods helps to lower the incidence of peptic ulcers and in turn, reduce the risk of stomach cancer.

Viral infections, protection against: The abundance of polyphenols have been shown to provide protection against viral infections.

Consumption Tips

Choose oranges that are firm and heavy for their size. This indicates that they are full of juice. Lighter fruit has more skin and drier pulp indicating less juice.

Oranges make good snack - just peel and enjoy, especially the loose skin varieties.

To extract most juice from oranges, always juice them when they are at room temperature. Rolling them under the palm of your hand on a flat surface will also help extract more juice.

Vitamin C gets destroyed fast when exposed to the air, so eat up an orange quickly once cut up. Do not leave the juice exposed for too long to preserve optimal nutrients.

Oranges can be stored at room temperature for up to two weeks or stored loosely in the refrigerator. Do not store wrapped to prevent moisture and mold.

Caution

No doubt oranges have many health benefits, always remember to eat in moderation. Excessive consumption of any citrus juices can leach calcium from the body system, causing decay of the bones and teeth.

Although we often don't eat orange peel in significant quantity, it is good to know that citrus peels contain some oils that may interfere with the effects of vitamin A.

The 7 Important of Alkaline Foods

Your health depends on the balance of an alkaline environment, created by eating foods such as tomatoes, avocados and green vegetables…striking the optimum 80/20 balance and regulating your body’s acid/alkaline chemistry through simple changes in diet can result in weight loss, increased stamina and strength, a stronger immune system and a greater sense of well-being.

1. SPINACH -All leafy greens should be eaten in abundance but spinach is my absolute favourite because it’s easy to buy, easy to use in recipes and salads and is delicious. Baby spinach or fully grown spinach are Nutritional powerhouses and are incredibly alkaline. As with all green foods, spinach is rich in chlorophyll (see more about the health benefits of chlorophyll here), a potent alkaliser and blood builder. It is also super high in vitamin K, vitamin A, manganese, folate, magnesium, iron, vitamin c, vitamin b2, calcium, potassium, vitamin e, dietary fiber…I doubt there is a more all round healthy food on earth and I highly encourage you to eat spinach throughout the day, every day.

2. KALE -Kale is another leafy green beauty that is widely known for its Cancer-Fighting, Cholesterol-Lowering, Antioxidant-rich, and Detoxifying goodness. Less popular than spinach, but only because it has a history of being cooked poorly (like cabbage) – when done right it is absolutely delicious (see recipes below, you’ll thank me). If you eat kale 2-3 times per week you’ll know it. Like spinach it is massively high in vitamin K, vitamin A and vitamin C and being Leafy Green it also has a huge Chlorophyll content. The reason it is so powerful against the Cancer Fight is that kale contains at least four Glucosinolates. I don’t want to lose you here by using words like glucosinolates – all you need to know is that as soon as you eat and digest kale, these glucosinolates are really easily converted by the body into cancer fighting compounds. Also quite amazing for Lowering Cholesterol, it should be noted that steamed kale is more effective for cholesterol lowering than raw.

3. CUCUMBER The beauty of cucumber is it’s water content – 95%. That is phenomenal and you won’t find that anywhere else. It’s the daddy of water-content. This of course makes it an incredibly hydrating food to consume, that ALSO contains superb amounts of antioxidants, including the super-important lignans. These highly beneficial polyphenols have more commonly been associated with the cruciferous vegetables, but their content in other veggies such as cucumbers is gaining more and more attention. Cucumbers contain a right load of lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol , three lignans that have a huge and very strong history of research in connection with Reduced Risk of Cardiovascular disease as well as several cancer types, including Breast, Uterine, Ovarian, and Prostate Cancers. The best thing about cucumber is that they provide the base for practically every alkaline soup, smoothie and juice – giving you a very alkaline, very nutritious base that also tastes great. In terms of the actual nutrient RDA per serve, cucumbers contain fair amounts of vitamins K and C, and slightly less of vitamin A and the B vitamins. Cucumbers also contain the following alkaline minerals: calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, selenium, copper, manganese, iron and zinc.

4. BROCCOLI – Broccoli is just a must. If you are serious about living with health, energy and vitality you simply have to eat broccoli, if not on a daily basis, then at least 4 times per week. Broccoli has been proven over and over and over again to be incredibly powerful in inhibiting Cancers, supporting the Digestive System, the Cardiovascular System, the Detoxification processes in the body and also supporting the Skin, metabolism, Ä°mmune system, being an Anti-Inflammatory and providing ample Antioxidants. Eaten steamed or raw its a Hugely Alkaline, Hugely Nutritious food. Please, please, please eat lots and lots of it. Put it in salads, juices, smoothies, soups…steam it with other veggies – you can even roast

5. AVOCADO -I eat a LOT of avocado. Not a salad, smoothie or soup goes by without me adding at least 1/2 an avocado per person. I probably eat at least five-seven per week, myself. Now, I know a lot of people give avocado a bad rep because it is a high-fat food (85% of it’s calories come from fats) – but this is totally insane. These are good fats that will not make you gain weight. If anything, due to the high content of oleic acid (making it an Omega 9 fat and very similar to olive oil), it can lower total cholesterol level and raise levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) while lowering low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), also known as the “bad” cholesterol. Oleic Acid also slows the development of heart disease, and promotes the production of Antioxidants. These beneficial omega oils also help speed the metabolism, actually leading to weight loss rather than gain. So now we’re over the fat issue, avocado also contains a wide range of other nutrients that have serious Anti-Ä°nflammatory, Heart Health, Cardiovascular Health, Anti-Cancer, and Blood Sugar Benefits. Containing key Antioxidants such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, selenium and more – it is a powerful, alkaline, nutrient-dense superfood.

6. CELERY – Celery, like cucumber is a favourite because it’s alkaline AND really high water content, so is used very frequently as a base in juices and soups (not so much smoothies as you have to juice it first…and then you have double the washing up). One of celery’s big benefits is it’s vitamin C level, which has the well known benefits – but two of it’s lesser known nutrients are phthalides which have been shown to Lower Cholesterol and coumarins which have been shown to inhibit Several Cancers. The beauty of vitamin C rich foods are that they help with the most common and most challenging health concerns – they support the Ä°mmune system, inflammation (so helps with Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Asthma etc), and vitamin C also helps significantly with Cardiovascular Health. If you are on a weight loss journey, you’ll also be happy to hear that this alkaline staple contains plenty of potassium and sodium and so is a diuretic – meaning it helps rid the body of excess fluids.

7. CAPSICUM / BELL PEPPER / PEPPER – The antioxidant superpower, bell pepper is one of my all-time-favourites because it is sweet, crunchy and refreshingly delicious. You can use it in almost any meal raw, grilled, fried, and roasted and it is always a winner. Impressively beneficial to our health cartenoids are highly researched and get a lot of attention in the health field and bell peppers contain over 30 different members of the carotenoid nutrient family. The only other food that is close to this is Tomato and all other foods are also-rans. Bell peppers have shown up in research relating to decreasing the risk of Cardiovascular Disease, type II Diabetes, Macular Degeneration, Cancer, inflammation and more. Alongside these lesser known or more complex-named antioxidants, bell pepper is one of, if not the best food source of the more common antioxidants: vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E. In fact, bell peppers contain twice as much vitamin C as oranges. Here are just SOME of the antioxidants bell pepper contains: – Flavonoids – luteolin – quercetin – hesperidin – Carotenoids – alpha-carotene – beta-carotene – cryptoxanthin – lutein – zeaxanthin – Hydroxycinnamic Acids – ferulic acid – cinnamic acid.

Health Benefits of Broccoli

Broccoli or Brassica aleracea is a plant that belongs to the family Brassicaceae, which includes vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels Sprouts. Broccoli closely resembles the cauliflower, except for its color. It is an extremely nutritious vegetable, which is loaded with a number of vital nutrients and chemicals.

Nutritional Information
It is one of the most significant sources of several important vitamins, including vitamin A, C, K, B6, B12, and folate or folic acid. It is abundant in calcium, potassium, chromium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. Apart from these, it contains several important phytochemicals and antioxidants, of which beta carotene, isothiocyanates, quercetin, indoles, and glutathione are worth mentioning.

It also contains the compound, sulforaphane, which has been found to possess anti-cancer, anti-microbial, and anti-diabetic properties. It is a rich source of fiber, and can meet the dietary requirements for both soluble and insoluble fiber. On the other hand, this vegetable is low in fats.

Health Benefits
The high vitamin C content of broccoli makes it an ideal vegetable for getting enough antioxidants, which are essential for neutralizing the harmful free radicals. Vitamin C can also strengthen the immune system and facilitate the absorption of iron. On the other hand, calcium and potassium found abundantly in this vegetable can prove beneficial for conditions like osteoporosis and high blood pressure.

Calcium is required for healthy teeth and bones, while potassium is a crucial mineral for metabolism, and for maintaining water balance in the body. This mineral is also good for the heart and the kidneys. Broccoli also contains a significant amount of chromium, which can help regulate the level of blood sugar and insulin.

This vegetable contains a significant amount of fiber, which is good for the health of the digestive system. Many studies have also highlighted the anti-cancer properties of this vegetable, which can be attributed to its high sulforaphane and indole content. Sulforaphane can help activate and increase the levels of those enzymes that are associated with suppressing cancer or cancer-causing agents. On the other hand, indoles can deactivate estrogen metabolites, and hence lower the risk of hormone-related cancer like breast and prostate cancer.

Apart from these, some other health benefits of this vegetable are, weight reduction, cholesterol reduction, control or prevention of Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, and stomach, colon, and lung cancer. The carotenoids found in this vegetable are important for the eyes, and they can help prevent diseases like cataract.

Pregnant women can lower the risk of birth defects in their children by including broccoli in their diet. A deficiency of folic acid is one of the most important risk factors for birth defects. This vegetable contains enough folic acid, and hence, it can help lower the incidence of birth defects in babies.

So, broccoli is an ideal food that can help control or prevent several common ailments, including cataract, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, common cold, diabetes, and even cancer and tumors. However, try to avoid overcooking this vegetable, as this can reduce its vitamin and mineral content. It is better to cook this vegetable in simple ways, like steaming or baking, instead of frying it in excess oil or fats.

Chocolate Intake During Pregnancy

For any expecting mother, the well-being of her unborn child is her highest priority. So, even if chocolate is her favorite food, she avoids eating it during pregnancy in the fear that it can cause harm to her baby. Of course, her concern is genuine. After all, we all know that chocolate contains caffeine, which increases the chances of miscarriage and preterm labor. It also tends to raise the pulse rate and blood pressure, which could be dangerous in this condition.

Benefits
Pregnant women who love chocolates will be pleased to know that it is not harmful for them and there is no need to stop eating chocolate during pregnancy, but it has to be taken only in moderate amounts. Your doctor may advice you to avoid drinking coffee but you can have chocolate, particularly dark chocolate. This is because the caffeine content in chocolate is far less as compared to coffee. During pregnancy, the permissible range of caffeine consumption is 270 mg per day. Chocolate contains around 5-30 mg of caffeine, while a cup of coffee has as much as 90-135 mg of caffeine. Hence, owing to high caffeine content, coffee should be avoided by pregnant women, but they can have a moderate amount of chocolate.

The first benefit that you get after eating chocolate is that it elevates your mood and makes you feel positive. You are already quite stressed out because of the changes taking place in your body during pregnancy. After eating a chocolate, you will notice that you feel very happy! Apart from that, there are a number of health benefits too that are associated with consumption of chocolate. One of the key health benefits is that it can reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia in pregnant women to a great extent. Pre-eclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication where the pregnant woman's blood pressure becomes abnormally high and there is a high level of protein in the urine. Eating chocolate can prevent this life-threatening condition because it has a chemical component named theobromine that is responsible for the bitter taste in cocoa. Now, this component has a stimulating effect on the heart function. It also relaxes the smooth muscles of the body and facilitates dilation of blood vessels. In this way, chocolate keeps blood pressure steady in pregnant women.

Chocolate is a great source of important minerals like iron and magnesium, which are required in a large amount during pregnancy. Iron has a major role in proper growth of the fetus while magnesium contributes towards the brain development of the unborn baby. In fact, when a woman craves chocolates during pregnancy, it has often been found that she is deficient in these nutrients. Chocolate has a good amount of flavonoids, which have amazing antioxidant properties. This in turn improves a pregnant woman's cardiovascular health and boosts her immune system too.

Risks
Even though there are so many beneficial effects of having chocolate during pregnancy, too much of it is bad for the baby. Increase in chocolate intake means more consumption of caffeine by the body, which can cause problems for both the baby and the mother-to-be. Some adverse effects of eating too much chocolate are as follows:
  • Excessive caffeine in the body may interfere with the iron absorption mechanism in the mother's body and lead to iron deficiency.
  • Heartburn is a common occurrence during pregnancy. Excessive consumption of chocolate can aggravate this problem further.
  • Too much of chocolate leads to decrease in blood flow to the uterus, which means less oxygen and nutrients will reach the fetus.
  • In the later stage of pregnancy, an increase in amount of caffeine intake can affect the sleeping pattern of the baby.
  • It may have an adverse impact on the growth and development of the baby and can give rise to problems like low birth weight or birth defects in the newborn baby.
I hope this article helped you to understand both the positive as well as the negative effects of eating chocolate during pregnancy. To yield maximum benefits of chocolate, you should eat low fat, good quality dark chocolate as it has high amounts of iron and flavonoids. Do not finish off a single bar in one day. Eat in moderation. You should stay away from milk chocolate or any other chocolates that are rich in sugar, calories, fat and additives as these components are not good for you. Take care!

Health Benefits of Licorice

Licorice is the root of the leguminous plant glycyrrhiza glabra, that originated in Southern Europe and some parts of Asia. Licorice extract is obtained by chemically boiling the root of the plant and then evaporating the excess water. It contains a compound known as glycyrrhizin, which is almost 50 times sweeter than sucrose. Licorice extract is used in a wide variety of candies as a flavoring agent throughout the world.

The Goodness of Licorice

Besides its use in candies, licorice also has a wide range of applications in medicines, due to the many health benefits that it imparts. One of the most common uses of licorice is in alleviating respiratory difficulties like cold, sore throat, bronchitis, allergies and even tuberculosis, due to its effectiveness in promoting expectoration. It can dissolve mucus, as a result of which it is being increasingly used in many modern cough syrups. Besides, it is a conventional remedy for mouth, stomach and gastric ulcers. It is also believed to have laxative property. This herb may be used as an antiviral agent in the treatment of shingles and ophthalmic, oral or genital herpes.

Licorice is said to contain isoflavones, which are phytoestrogenic in nature, i.e. they can cause estrogenic and/ or anti estrogenic effects. Therefore, licorice has been found to be effective in reducing the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause. In addition to these, it can also prevent the occurrence of hyperkalemia or elevated level of potassium in blood, which can cause cardiac arrhythmia. Cardiac Arrhythmia refers to conditions which are characterized by abnormal electrical activity in the heart, that cause heart beats which are either too fast or too slow. This can lead to cardiac arrest and consequent death. However, large doses of licorice are not recommended, as the compounds glycyrrhizic and glycyrrhetinic acids found in licorice can cause hypokalemia (low level of potassium in blood) and increase in blood pressure. To avoid such a situation, deglycyrrhizinated licorice preparations should be used which are also available.

Licorice can be used in the treatment of ileitis, the inflammation of ileum (last part of the small intestine). Because of its antispasmodic property, it is effective in diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut syndrome (damaged bowel lining caused by antibiotics, toxins, parasites, etc.) and Crohn's disease. In traditional herbal medicines, it is also used in the treatment of cancer. Some studies have shown that licorice can be effective in heart diseases, while some other studies have found it to reduce the level of cholesterol.

Licorice has been found to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) in mice. Licorice is also supposed to enhance memory and cognition. Some researches have shown that the compound glycyrrhizin found in licorice may be effective in treating hepatitis B and hepatitis C. It is also found to reduce body fat. Some recent studies suggested that this magic herb can be effective in treating HIV/AIDS as it inhibits the replication of HIV and stimulate interferons, which is the virus fighting agent of the body.

However, excess consumption of licorice candies has been found to be harmful for the liver and cardiovascular system. Over-consumption of licorice causes hypertension and edema (swelling due to excess accumulation of fluid in cells, tissues and serous cavities). It is also not suggested for people having hypertension and kidney problems. To conclude, it is important to use this herb carefully and in moderate amounts for medicinal purposes, to derive maximum health benefits.

The 9 Health Benefits of Limes

Limes are a citrus fruit. While the sour lime is the most common in the United States, there are also varieties of sweet limes. Lime juice is used in all types of food preparation (our favorite is in guacamole!) as well as in cocktails, skin creams, disinfectants, candies, oils, toothpastes and more. Limes were essential to maintaining the health of the British navy during the 19th century because their vitamin C content prevented scurvy. This is why British sailors are called Limeys. Here are 9 health benefits of limes:

Cancer Prevention
Limes contain limonoid, a compound believed to have anti-carcinogen effects. These compounds are thought to help prevent skin, mouth, stomach, breast, lung and other types of cancer. An article published in the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" noted that limonin has been proven to induce cancer cell death. Limes are also a potent source of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C. Antioxidants reduce the risk of cancer by preventing free radical damage to the cells and DNA. Limes may have anti-inflammatory properties that can slow the risk of chronic inflammation, another high risk factor for developing cancer.

High In Antioxidants
Limes are a great source of vitamin C and other phytonutrients and flavonoids with antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are key in neutralizing free radical activity that damages the cells and DNA and can increase the risk of cancer, heart disease and premature aging.

High In Vitamin C
Just a quarter cup of lime juice contains over 46% the DV of vitamin C. Vitamin C is one of the most important vitamins and antioxidants in human health. It helps boost the immune system, supports heart health, wards off sickness and disease and protects the eyes from conditions like cataracts.

Antibiotic
One of the flavonoid compounds found in limes are believed to have powerful antibiotic properties. Studies in west Africa found that the daily addition of limes into the diet of villagers helped reduce the occurrence of cholera.

Immunity Booster
The vitamin C in limes helps to boost immunity and offer long term support for the immune system. It may help to prevent the flu and the common cold as well as reduce the risk of chronic diseases like cancer.

Anti-Inflammatory
Vitamin C and many of the other phytonutrient compounds in limes have anti-inflammatory effects. Limes may be useful in lowering the risk of conditions related to chronic inflammation like arthritis, asthma, and heart disease.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Prevention
A study of more than 20,000 people published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases found that subjects who consumed more vitamin C rich foods like limes were far less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis and related arthritic conditions. Subjects who ate the least amount of foods with vitamin C were three times more likely to develop arthritis.

Heart Health
Antioxidants like vitamin C are often associated with a reduced risk of heart attack and heart disease. Foods that have potent anti-inflammatory properties are also believed to help support the cardiovascular system.

Eye Health
Vitamin C is essential to the proper function of the eyes. Vitamin C deficiency can lead to cataracts and other eye conditions. Maintaining good vitamin C levels by eating citrus like limes and lime juice is a good way to maintain proper eye health.
