HTC One XL Snap Review

Despite the fact that HTC didn't have the best year financially, it did manage to create some stellar handsets, beginning with the HTC One X early in the year.

While the HTC One joined the Samsung Galaxy S3 in promoting the benefits of a quad core processor to the specification geeks around the world, it lacked one feature that users were hungry for - 4G connectivity.

HTC's response was to release this handset, the One XL. Available exclusively through Telstra in Australia, the One XL offered practically the exact same experience as the HTC One X, but replaced HSPA connectivity with 4G, while dropping back to a dual-core processor to save battery life.

With an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean released for the phone just before Christmas, the One XL has also become one of the most advanced Android smartphones on the market.

Combined with its sleek unibody design, which incorporates the stunning 4.7-inch 1280x720 pixel display found on the One X, this handset has stood out as a flagship for Telstra's LTE network.

Design

Given the One XL has an identical appearance to the One X, we could almost copy and paste our review from the 3G handset here and be done with it.

Instead, we'll recap. The One XL has a sleek unibody design that is a testament's to HTC's engineering team. Despite the massive 4.7-inch screen, the phone feels comfortable in the hand.

At 129 grams, the handset is nice and light, which is about 20 grams heavier than the iPhone 5. That 20 grams makes all the difference though, as the phone feels solid, rather than underweight.

The 8.9mm thick body is stunningly thin, while the matte finish offers plenty of grip, as opposed to the slippery plastic of Samsung's Galaxy S3.

The One XL's screen is definitely a highlight of the handset, which isn't a surprise as it's the same one used in the One X. The Super IPS LCD 2 technology creates a brilliant picture that offers an abundance of colours, wide viewing angles and responsive controls.

Below the screen are the standard three Android control buttons - home, back and menu. The dedicated real estate on the device for these soft buttons - as opposed to the Xperia TX, for example - is a much more convenient solution for navigating the handset.

Because of the unibody construction, you probably shouldn't expect too much in the way of hardware versatility. There's no replaceable battery and no expandable memory to supplement the 32GB of on board storage.

In fact, connections are a pretty basic, standard affair. A single micro-USB port can be found on the handset's left side, while a volume rocker sits on the right.

On the top of the phone, a power toggle, 3.5mm headphone jack and Micro-SIM card slot have taken up residence. The Micro-SIM card slot is of the Apple variety, requiring a dedicated tool (or a paperclip) to open up.

The back of the phone is marked by the presence of an eight-megapixel camera with LED flash. The larger lens actually sticks out on the phone's back like a boil, but given the quality of photos, is a negligible design flaw.

Overall, this is a stunningly crafted handset, just like the HTC One X its design was cloned from. - source

Apple Pays Out $21M to Use iOS Clock Design

Quality Swiss-made timepieces don't come cheap. Just ask Apple.

The company shelled out a $21 million "lump sum" to license a clock-face design from the Swiss Federal Railway service, French news agency AFP reported, citing a Swiss paper.

In September, the railway service, also known as SBB, objected to the clock-face design in iOS 6, saying it too closely resembled a trademarked design created in 1944 by SBB employee Hans Hilfiker and used in train stations throughout Switzerland.

Hilfiker's design has been honored by both the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the London Design Museum and has become a symbol of Swiss punctuality, according to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs' swissworld site. It's also licensed to Mondaine, a Swiss watch manufacturer.

SBB reached a licensing agreement with Apple last month, but at the time, an SBB representative said the amount of the licensing fee and other details of the deal would remain confidential.

SmartBro Pocket WiFi Hands On Snap

When we moved from our condo in Las Pinas to an apartment in Laguna we had our telephone line and internet (PLDT and DSL) transferred as well. We were in a two-year contract with PLDT and it will be costly if we will have it cut and apply for a new line.

For 2 weeks in November, we don't have cable, landline and internet. Local antenna can only get Qtv channel, thus we would only watch TweetBiz. And oh, Jeng loves Tim Yap is an understatement all sarcasm. It's ok not to have cable because we can always watch downloaded movies and tv series. The hardest part is not having internet. Life gets boring without internet.

One day, I got home and are house was once again a wifi zone. Jeng bought a Smart Bro Pocket Wifi!

From the name of the unit itself, you will have an idea that this is a small gadget. It's small like a mobile phone, it can fit in your pocket.

The unit itself costs P3600. During that time, there was promo where you can pay for the unit for 2 years. That will be P150 a month. Not bad! The internet cost P495 for 50 hours/month. That’s like P10/hour. You will be charged P10/30mins on the succeeding use of internet after the 50 hours. All in all, we are billed P645 per month. Internet speed is up to 2MBPS. I actually don't understand what an MBPS is. Hahaha. Jeng said 2 MBPS is already fast. But I think fast is relative. Well, for a non-techie person (Like me), as long as I can open facebook, twitter, log in into this blog and open all the other sites I usually check, that is fast. At the same time, speed varies depending on the smart signal on your location.

The unit comes with a battery similar to that of a mobile phone. Of course a charger is included when you purchase the unit. Battery lasts for about 2 to 3hours of continuous used. It can be use while you are charging it.

Once the landline and DSL was up we limit the use the pocket wifi when we are out. Jeng driving from Laguna to Marikina and vice versa, I’m using it. Dinner and coffee with friends in Tagaytay, we used it. Going to a friend’s party, we let them borrow and use it. Basically if we are not home, we bring and use it. 5 laptop and/or phone can connect all at the same time, according to smart website. Yes, I am walking wifi zone, as the radio commercial says!

We are still maintaining it today because this can be used during emergencies. Like this week, we learned that our DSL was cut off. Jeng did not pay last month's bill because we are asking for an adjustment from PLDT for the two weeks that the phone was installed but we didn't have dial tone and of course no internet. The telephone line was not cut off, it was just the internet. Weird ‘no?

Good thing we kept the pocket wifi.

SmartBro 4G LTE Huawei E392 My Beta Test

I have been under the Smart LTE Closed Beta Testing Program for quite some time now and from what I can say, it certainly beats other wireless ISP when it comes to speed. As a wireless internet user for around 4 years and using around 4 wireless internet connections here at home I can say that the Smart LTE has got some potential, albeit the rumors going around that the price plan for the upcoming Smart LTE is primed for premium plans or in layman’s term high priced plans.

Im no smart broadband user so I have no idea how fast is “fast” for this connection. Plus for the fact that my location here in Manila does not receive a LTE signal means that it might take time until I can consider the Smart LTE as one of my preferred connections, but that’s just me.

Though I don’t have the Smart LTE connection, the USB Dongle Huawei E392 which I am using right now for the Smart LTE receives HSPA+ signal which is fast specially during off peak hours that my speed skyrockets at 4mbps tops. I bet it could go higher if I am in a place with less walls or in a higher floor.

It would depend on what kind of internet user you are. But if you are an internet user who is always on the go or maybe a home user that needs a fast internet connection without minding the budget, then the Smart LTE might just do the job. Otherwise, you can just stick to your trusty internet connection until the Smart LTE has spread out.

Check here if you want to know if your location is being catered with Smart LTE Signal with the Smart LTE Sites List.

Huawei E589 4G LTE Router Snap Review

The Huawei E589 basically takes an ordinary SIM card connected to a service provider with either 3G, or 4G where available and shares it. The idea isn’t that advanced, and neither is the design of the device. It looks like a smartphone with slightly rounded corners, and a bit of plumpness to the look.

Once the SIM card has been inserted you can power up the device. As there is no input you have to enter the bios settings using a Mac or PC. This has to be done to enter the pin code; otherwise you won’t have much use for it. Once the pin code is inserted the device is live. Simply connect it by choosing it as your WiFi source, and enter the number of the device. It is really easy to get it all going, and I managed to hook up an iMac, MacBook Pro, Macbook, 2 iPads, 3 iPhones and a PC to it at the same time.

Sure it still had to share only a 3G connection, but for checking email and surfing the web it worked with this setup. Streaming on YouTube, or downloading large games on iTunes isn’t what this is ideally for. I forgot to try out the PS Vita, and that is perhaps the device benefiting the most from this kind of solution. When only one device is connected I didn’t see any difference in speed compared to my blazing hot cable. That was when looking at page searches, and loading of news and the TouchGen website.

The design is kind of dull in my opinion since it looks like a generic Android phone. More could have been done to make it easy to understand that it is not a phone. A cube, round or even star shape would have been cool.

Another thing that I found to be missing is a case, or pouch to protect it. It comes with nothing, and I used the Bose Mobile Headset zipped pouch when riding my bike to work. In the box you only get a charger, and a quick start guide.

The Huawei E589 combines quick speeds in a small portable format. It is a great solution for a company, or the private person with multiple devices but not wanting to have multiple 3G accounts. For those with the WiFi model of the PS Vita it gives that extra portability, and you can still use your WiFi iPad to surf the web that the Vita handles so poorly. I found this to be a really exciting device, and now I want one for my summer holidays.

Huawei BM622i and BM622m Comparison

If you take a look the physical appearance of screenshot above it looks like no differences, from left is Huawei model BM622m while on the right side is model BM622i. From the rear both have same ports such as the RJ45 LAN, POTS for VoIP Telephone, SMA connector for external antenna, likewise the DC power supply and also the pin hole for the reset button are identical.

Looking at the front view there has no big change, from down indicator is POTS LEDs for VoIP followed by LAN, Power and the WiMAX five lit signal strength status.

The internal side of Huawei model BM622m has really big difference with regards to board and the layout, flash memory is also different to the BM622i CPE. As you can see from above, below is the BM622i internal boards and layout.

It only proves that Huawei BM622m and BM622i are far not identical to each other with regards to their hardware such as CPU, Flash Memory including the WAN chips, maybe because old version of  Huawei BM622 has very poor in terms of security issue.

Novatel Expedite E362 LTE Mini PCIe modem

Novatel Wireless has become the first modem manufacturer to get its embedded LTE module certified by Verizon Wireless for use on the carrier’s growing 4G LTE network, with the Expedite E362 also offering backward compatibility to 2G/3G GSM and CDMA networks. Interestingly, as well as working with various flavors of Windows, the miniPCI modem also supports Android (from Froyo to Honeycomb), meaning this could well end up being the LTE card that slots into Motorola’s XOOM 4G.

Verizon had promised a free 4G update for the XOOM when it launched the 3G version of the slate earlier in the year. At the time, though, no 4G miniPCI modems certified for the LTE network were available, something which has obviously now changed with the advent of this new card.

As well as LTE there’s quadband HSPA+ and GPS support, though which of those capabilities Verizon might leave turned on remains to be seen. Even if it doesn’t find its way into the XOOM, expect notebooks and tablets using the Novatel card to reach the market sooner rather than later.
